Job overview

Emanuel School is a co-educational independent secondary school in Wandsworth, London, with just over 900 pupils. We aim to balance academic ambition with the provision of supportive pastoral care and a wide range of co-curricular activities across the arts and sports.

The deputy head position is a vital leadership role, deputising for the headmaster as required and with a large and varied brief. Central to the role is oversight of pupil welfare, progress and behaviour. In fulfilling these duties, alongside those involving colleagues, parents and logistical matters, the deputy head will ensure the smooth running of school day to day. This role also acts as the school’s designated safeguarding lead. The deputy head will join a strong and evolving senior management team, with shared whole-school responsibilities for strategic planning, compliance and operations.

We are seeking an exceptional person – someone who has developed strong leadership skills (as a head of department, assistant head or similar), and who has demonstrated the ability to instil a purposeful and positive ethos in that area. He/she will have a compelling personal presence, high emotional intelligence and a track record of investing in their own development. Naturally, they will also be an excellent classroom practitioner and enjoy working closely with colleagues, parents, and pupils.

Recognising that the retirement of the most senior deputy has prompted this recruitment, for the right candidate, a senior deputy head role and package may be available.

Completed application forms should be sent to recruitment@emanuel.org.uk by the closing date: Friday 15th June 2018 at 5pm.

Please note that this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and is subject to a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Check. Emanuel School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

About Emanuel School

“The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils.”

ISI Inspection Report April 2023

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.

At the heart of our school is a positive and welcoming culture. We are fortunate to have a committed and talented group of colleagues, people who recognise the importance of everyone at the school having a varied working life, a sense of personal growth and shared enjoyment. We wish you the best of luck with your application.
