Job overview

We are looking to appoint as our Deputy Headteacher someone who can bring outstanding leadership qualities and evidence of real and sustained positive impact in their current role, to enable us to continue to uphold the highest standards and maintain our trajectory of continuous improvement.  You will work alongside the Headteacher and our two other Deputy Headteachers. A specific brief will be drawn from the list below, which will build on your existing evidenced expertise, and provide the supported professional development that could, if you want it, lead to headship, potentially within the Trust, in the next 4-5 years.

The Blue Coat School is a large, Ofsted Grade 1 outstanding, co-educational, Church of England, 11 – 18 Academy in the Diocese of Manchester.  It is the lead school of the Northern Alliance Teaching School (www.northern-alliance.net) and of the Manchester Nexus SCITT (www.manchesternexus.com) and has just been designated as the named school of The Oldham and Tameside Teaching School. In 2015, The Blue Coat School established The Cranmer Education Trust, a Multi-Academy Trust which now includes The Blue Coat School, St. Anne’s Church of England Academy in Middleton, two primaries (East Crompton St. George’s and Mayfield) and Manchester Nexus (the SCITT).  The Cranmer Education Trust is set to open The Brian Clarke Church of England Academy, a new free school in Oldham, in September 2022.

We are particularly interested in applicants who can demonstrate expertise as a leader and manager in the following areas, and we would expect the successful candidate to provide the strategic lead on at least two of them across the school. The role will be tailored to fit both the experience of the successful candidate, and to offer further professional development.

  1. Leadership of progress and attainment for the whole 11-16 cohort.  This will include all related systems, processes, analysis, communication, and quality assurance, plus leadership of assessment and reporting policy and practice, responsibility for examinations (managed by Exams Office), and external accountability.
  2. Leadership of our pastoral provision.  This will include responsibility for our pastoral systems and structures across Key Stage 3 and 4.  The postholder will provide the strategic lead for school ethos, standards, and expectations, as well as pupil welfare and wellbeing.
  3. School operations and organisational management, modelling the school ethos, day-to-day oversight, and management, and planning the logistics of a very busy, dynamic school of more than 1700 pupils.

You will join a professional and capable leadership team which includes both teaching and support staff leaders and managers.  Whatever your actual responsibilities, you will work with all staff across The Blue Coat School, and with Cranmer Education Trust’s officers, as well as working with our partner schools within the Teaching School Alliance and multi-academy trust, and the wider community of Oldham schools.  We are looking for someone who is committed to working collaboratively with staff and who can inspire people to grow and develop.

The Blue Coat School is located close to Oldham town centre, with motorway networks, buses and trams close by.  Oldham is a good place to live and work.  There is a wide range of housing which can be very affordable.  We provide free car parking on site, and we are equidistant from the heart of Manchester (with nearby Metro station) and the Peak District.  There are lovely villages, and metropolitan living, both within reach.

This post is subject to an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check.

To apply, please visit www.bluecoatdeputy.co.uk or call our advisers AS DTi on 07736 775776 evenings and weekends, or e-mail pp@asdti.com

Closing date for applications:  18th May 2021 at 10am.

Interviews are likely towards the end of the following week (week commencing 24th May 2021).

It is hoped the successful candidate will be available for a September 2021 start, but this is negotiable depending upon notice periods etc.

The Cranmer Education Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

The Cranmer Education Trust is a charitable company limited by guarantee registered in England and Wales (registered number No 07687709, VAT No 118109926).  Registered Officer: The Blue Coat School, Egerton Street, Oldham, OL1 3SQ.

About The Blue Coat CofE School

Welcome to The Blue Coat School

Mission statement:  Faith – Vision – Nurture

Welcome to The Blue Coat School website, which we hope will give you a really good insight into our school, and show how our young people are learning how to become everything they can be, and are meant to be.  You will find all the information about student achievement and progress across the curriculum, and links to national performance data and reports, so you can see how well our young people do, and why we are very proud of our academic record.  Just as important, you’ll also find, in the newsletters especially, a picture of life in a dynamic community where students grow in confidence, independence, leadership and resilience, not only in their lessons, but in the breadth of Blue Coat’s provision.  I hope you will also see how the school’s Christian ethos shines through, and that all our young people, of all faiths and denominations, learn to grow together in love, compassion, generosity of spirit, and mutual respect.  If you are an education professional, or would like to join this great profession, you’ll also find links to our work as a National Teaching School and lead school of The Northern Alliance and our work on system leadership, school-to-school support, research and development, and training the best teachers through the School Direct programme.  We look forward to meeting you.

Mr R Higgins
