Job overview

Deputy Learning Director (Science)

UPS/MPS – with a TLR 2b £5025 - Plus an additional £2000 Recruitment and Retention Bonus.

We are a vibrant, forward-thinking school that places significant value on professional learning and career development. We are seeking an inspirational, highly motivated and innovative Deputy Learning Director of Science to join our welcoming science team to help drive forward further developments in the curriculum. The successful candidate will be able to teach science across KS3 and 4, and either Biology, Chemistry or Physics at GCSE Triple Science and A-level.

Kingsthorpe College is an oversubscribed 11-18 Academy with approximately 1400 students on roll (200 students Post 16). We were graded by Ofsted as Good in all areas in December 2019, and we are now looking forward to the next stage of our journey from good to great. In September 2021, we joined Orbis Education Trust, and this has unlocked further possibilities for colleagues to develop, progress, and make a significant contribution to inspiring the students within our schools. We therefore believe it is an exciting time to join #TeamKC and be part of a community, which is resolute in its drive to help our students leave with the confidence and skills to be able to take part in the great conversations of our times. Kingsthorpe is on a journey to world-class status. Please look at our website https://www.kingsthorpecollege.org.uk for a comprehensive view of our school.

We welcome applications from both experienced and early career teachers who are looking to fast track into a leadership position.

The science department achieves outstanding results year on year, which are above the national average. Triple Science and A-level are popular options across the school, we have excellent exam results at both GCSE and A Level. A good proportion of those students go on to study Science based degrees at university.

At Kingsthorpe College, we believe that an understanding of science is essential for our pupils to engage with the modern world. Regardless of their level of scientific study, we believe that pupils should be able to leave Kingsthorpe College with the scientific knowledge needed to think more deeply about their world. Now, more than ever, pupils will need to be equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to make reasoned choices and judgements based on evidence; for example when considering human impact on the environment, evaluating what is real and what is “fake news”, and making healthy life choices.

Science, however, is more than just facts and figures to be memorised and repeated. We believe that science is a process; it embodies a method and process of enquiry, evidence gathering and questioning which is unique to science, yet transferrable to other disciplines. This process is linked to our of practical work; in our subject, this is used to drive pupil understanding, inspire wonder and build on our students natural curiosity.

This faculty are friendly, hard-working, innovative and committed to stimulating student interest in the world around them and enjoyment in their studies. We place significant emphasis on working collegiately as a faculty to share our expertise and subsequently enhance the learning experience with our students. Every member of the staff is involved in a variety of professional learning programmes that take place across the academic year.

We would like the successful applicant to start as soon as possible but the latest start date would be September 2023.

Staff wellbeing is important to us, and we offer a range of benefits to support our employees including:

  •  Westfield Health Plan
  • Discounts at retailers and holiday companies
  •  Free Parking

Our Ethos and Culture

A genuine commitment to respect for individuals is shown in the daily life of Kingsthorpe College. One of the first things you notice when you walk into College is how nice everybody is to each other – how frequently people smile, share a friendly joke, take an interest in each other and find something positive and encouraging to say. It is also a very calm, relaxed place – not because there is never any noise (!) but because we make a point of ‘not shouting’.

Young people hate being shouted at (so do adults actually). It makes it harder for them to listen and respond positively. We believe that people choose their own behaviour and making the right choice is sometimes easier for some than others – but everybody chooses. Students at Kingsthorpe College appreciate the fact that, as a College, we are extremely fortunate that our young people usually make the right decision. They are very well behaved so that every minute of every lesson is made to count.

Staff at the school also understand that people appreciate being noticed for doing the right thing. We therefore make a point of praising and rewarding at every opportunity so that students feel good about themselves as often as possible. This goes for the staff too!

Our shared values of Aspiration, Responsibility, Respect and Care
