The role of Deputy Principal

Our current Deputy Principal is retiring at the end of this academic year and we want to welcome a new post holder into the role of Deputy Principal who will provide inspirational leadership, develop collaboratively our curriculum and drive quality improvements across the college.

We are looking for a collaborative individual who will work with leaders and staff across our college and stakeholders to ensure the curriculum offer is responsive to current and future developments, whilst ensuring we remain focused on providing the highest possible quality experience to students and employers.

To succeed in this role you will have the breadth and depth of senior experience in curriculum and quality. You will have a clear sense of what outstanding performance in a complex environment looks like and will have a track record of delivering consistently good outcomes. Given the focus of our values on students, staff and our community, you will be a visible and outwardly focused leader who enjoys building positive relationships with a range of stakeholders.

Role Purpose

The post holder’s specific responsibility is to lead on raising standards and developing and driving the Further Education, Higher Education, and work-based curriculum to ensure it responds to local, regional and national needs and the current and future policy agenda. In addition, the post holder will lead the quality improvement strategy to ensure that targets are achieved in line with national policy and college standards.

The Deputy Principal (Curriculum and Quality) will be a Senior Post Holder and a member of the Senior Leadership Team, with corporate responsibility for curriculum planning, delivery, student success, the learner experience, learning support, quality of outcomes and curriculum delivered via partnership arrangements. The post holder will be the named lead at executive level for all curriculum, quality and learning support across the college and its curriculum delivery through partners and other bodies. The Deputy Principal will be required to deputise for the Principal and Chief Executive as and when required.

Providing outstanding leadership and management to their direct reports, the Deputy Principal will ensure that challenging targets are set and performance is managed to ensure optimum effectiveness in all areas under the control of this post.

The post holder will be the college nominee for inspection purposes.

Duties: Senior Post Holder

The Deputy Principal will provide inspirational leadership, development and direction across the college. The post holder will be responsible and accountable for delivering the strategic plan targets as set by the Corporation whilst being responsible for the strategic development of the curriculum and bringing about improvements in standards and outcomes. As a Senior Post Holder, the Deputy Principal will undertake duties as delegated by the Principal and Chief Executive or Corporation, to include:

• To act as lead executive team member for the college’s Curriculum, Quality and Standards Committee.

• To attend Corporation meetings and Governor training sessions as appropriate.

• To act as dismissal officer.

• To act as hearing officer for grievances and performance investigations as required.

• To act as hearing officer for student disciplinary investigations and student appeals.

• To act as appeals officer in the absence of the Principal and Chief Executive where the post holder has not previously been part of the investigation.

Experience and Specialist Knowledge

Essential

• Experience of working in a senior curriculum or quality leadership role in a complex organisation.

• Experience of providing outstanding leadership and management across curriculum and quality operations.

• Experience of leading teams to deliver improved outcomes.

• Experience of developing and implementing strategies to improve the standard of teaching, learning and assessment.

• Experience and prior responsibility of quality improvement & reporting.

• Experience of building partnerships and working with stakeholders to the benefit of the organisation.

• A clear understanding of college funding and the ability to design curriculum in line with funding methodology.

• Curriculum development experience which ensures provision responds to local and regional priorities.

• Demonstrable experience of improving outcomes in English and mathematics.

• Experience of developing and implementing quality frameworks and leading on the development of self-evaluation and assessment.

• An understanding of equal opportunities issues and willing to positively promote equality, diversity and inclusion within an educational context.

Desirable

• Ofsted Inspection training and experience.

• Experience of being the nominated lead (nominee) for inspections.

• Understanding of the learning support service in a post-16 learning environment.

Hopwood Hall College is a further education college located in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. The college was first established in 1992, and since its founding has seen extensive redevelopment and modernisation, including the installation of a brand-new technology centre in 2012 which provides facilities for studying motor vehicle maintenance, engineering and brickwork. Although the college had previously contained its own sixth form centre, since 2010 Hopwood Hall has concentrated solely on vocational qualifications for school leavers, along with its extensive adult-education programmes. The college occupies two main sites, located close by to each other in Greater Manchester, each providing a range of high-quality teaching facilities.

Values and Vision

Hopwood Hall College offers a huge range of subjects from entry-level courses up to foundation degrees, with part-time provision available for adult students looking to pursue their qualifications while working. In terms of younger students, Hopwood Hall begins accepting students at age 14, providing entry-level vocational qualifications and, potentially, apprenticeships for Key Stage 4 pupils looking to study outside of school. We have a purpose-built Salon, Restaurant and Technology Centre as well as extensive Sports and Animal Care facilities. Outside of study, the college also works hard to foster a sense of community among its students, playing host to a range of recreational common areas for students to relax and socialise.

They have established good links with community groups to engage with learners who have not participated in education and training for some time. These learners benefit from the development of their essential English and mathematical skills, including English for speakers of other languages; they are progressing to further study and/or employment.”
