Job overview

Bacon’s College was established in the Surrey Docks peninsula in Rotherhithe, South East London in 1991 as a City Technology College, becoming an academy in 2007 and joined the United Learning Trust in 2018. Bacon’s has long been an important part of the fabric of the local community in south east London and has served the community in its various forms for over three hundred years. We are proud of that history and contribution and of the way the College has evolved and adapted to meet the needs of its young people.

Bacon’s is a thriving community that is welcoming of students of all faiths and those of none. Staff and students value the distinctive nature of its Christian ethos to which every member of its community contributes. The value system and ethos of Bacon’s is inclusive of all within a strong Christian ethos, characterised by the quality and openness of the positive relationships between students, staff and the wider community. The strength of our ethos was recognised during a SIAMS inspection in December 2019 which graded the College as ‘Excellent’.

Today, Bacon’s sits in modern and well-equipped facilities in an area that is rapidly changing and growing. We are fortunate to offer fantastic media and IT facilities and excellent sporting provision. Learning is at the heart of everything we do and we have the highest aspirations for our students, determined that they can achieve and overcome any barriers that may lie in their path. A significant proportion of our students go on to university each year and a culture of aspiration and achievement is evident.

Bacon’s is embarking on a rapid improvement journey and many of the elements are already in place to make it a fantastic place to work and make an impact.

The Role

We are seeking a passionate, highly motivated, and ambitious Deputy SENCO to join our committed Learning Development team at Bacon’s College. If you are a dedicated, motivated and determined individual looking for an opportunity to make your mark in a large and supportive school with huge potential, this is the perfect opportunity for you to join our journey to success.

The Learning Development department is a forward looking and hardworking team. It is made up of SEN teachers who teach small intervention classes and Learning Support Assistants, all of whom are passionate about SEND and delivering outstanding support to teachers and students to ensure that students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) learn effectively in the classroom and make outstanding progress. We believe that all students should be given the tools to become independent young people who are able to self-regulate their behaviour, so that they are confident to take their place in society.

About you

This role calls for an individual who is able to inspire, challenge and motivate our students. An ability to teach and have a dyslexia qualification is an advantage but not essential, you are ambitious for the students, must have the highest of expectations of every student, be enthusiastic, have a can-do attitude, be calm under pressure, flexible and have a desire to flourish within the Learning Development team as well as the desire to become a valued member of Bacon’s College.

This is an exciting time to join Bacon’s College; if you share our high expectations and are passionate about making a difference then we look forward to receiving your application.

United Learning

Bacon’s College joined United Learning in Spring 2018, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England. Our schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could.

United Learning and Bacon’s College values diversity and inclusion and is committed to creating and sustaining a more ethnically diverse workforce. In this regard we would not only welcome applications professionals from minority ethnic origin, but from majority ethnic professionals who share our commitment. If you have an unshakeable commitment to improving the lives of all young people, we encourage you to apply.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.

Bacon’s College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all who work at the school to share this commitment. Successful applicants will be subject to an enhanced disclosure through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
