Job overview

Bourne Grammar School

We are an outstanding and oversubscribed mixed selective school serving Bourne, Stamford and Peterborough. There are currently 1,579 students on roll including 374 in our Sixth Form. Our students are well-behaved and motivated and are taught in modern and well-resourced facilities. Jonathan Maddox, the Headteacher, has been in post for over 13 years and under his leadership the school has expanded to become one of the largest grammar schools in the country. The school offers 240 places in Year 7. The vast majority of Year 11 students transfer into our Sixth Form where students are offered a choice of 27 A-Level subjects, including Music.

The best atmosphere, the best support, the best results

This is our purpose statement - we have no long or complicated mission statement. The order of the purpose statement is deliberate; we believe that if we get the atmosphere and support right then, given our able students and committed staff, good results will follow. The atmosphere is special and cherished by us all and something that interview candidates often remark upon.

We are a large and busy school and our students are well-behaved, motivated and want to be here and their parents/carers want them to be here. Most of the students, most of the time, want to learn and enjoy lessons which are well-planned, well-taught and engaging.

The Maths Department

The Maths Department is one of the largest departments within the school and consists of a Subject Leader, Deputy Subject Leader and eight full-time teachers. Several hold promoted posts such as KS3 Coordinator and Subject Leader: Statistics. The Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and Head of Sixth Form also teach Maths. The Maths department is a well-established and close-knit team ranging in experience from newly-qualified to 20+ years in the profession.

The Maths Department teaching rooms are located together in modern and well-resourced classrooms. Most members of the department have their own classroom and, once the current programme of accommodation re-deployment and refurbishment has finished, every member of the department will have their own classroom. A generous curriculum budget supports the delivery of well-resourced and rich lessons.

The AQA syllabus is followed for GCSE with the vast majority of students sitting the higher tier exams. The weakest students are taught in small groups. and are entered for the foundation tier. The overall GCSE pass rate (grades 9-4) in 2018 was 98.5% with 58.7% achieving grades 9-7. There were 33 grade 9’s. Statistics (Edexcel) is a popular GCSE option subject choice attracting around 70 students per year group (Year 10 & 11).

A-Level Maths is consistently one of the top subject choices at A-Level. There are currently four sets in Year 12 and three sets in Year 13, all studying the OCR syllabus. Further Maths A-Level (OCR) attracts around 20 students each year. A significant number of students continue to study Maths at University.

The role

The Deputy Subject Leader will support the Subject leader and colleagues within the department. There is a particular emphasis on student tracking and progress and ensuring that the highest standards of teaching and learning are met. The Deputy Subject Leader may also have specific areas of responsibility such as KS5 Coordinator, STEP specialist etc. Remitted time will be available for this key post.

Previous experience in a promoted post is desirable but not essential. If you do not have experience, we would still like to hear from you if you think you have leadership potential.

 Working at Bourne Grammar School

The teaching staff body numbers around 90 teachers supported by 40 non-teaching colleagues. All teaching staff are subject specialists and are only required to teach their own subject. Staff absence is very low as is staff turnover. Staff who do leave often do so for promoted posts.

All teaching staff at Bourne Grammar School are issued with a high-quality laptop and other benefits include a Childcare Voucher scheme and free on site parking.

Bourne is a pleasant, semi-rural and expanding town in South Lincolnshire. It is surrounding by beautiful villages and countryside and yet has easy access to Peterborough, Cambridge, London and the motorway network. London Kings Cross is a 52 minute train journey from Peterborough. Lincolnshire and its neighbouring counties offer a wide range of housing considerably below the national average house price cost. Primary school provision and facilities for families are excellent.
