Job overview

Have you got:

  • The drive for a challenge
  • A commitment to social justice
  • The skill to lead
  • And the hunger to learn?

The Difference are seeking London’s most capable, curious and compassionate teachers to join the pioneer cohort of the Difference Leaders programme, from July 2019.

The Opportunity

The Difference Leaders innovative programme combines a two-year leadership position in a PRU or AP academy with an intensive training programme and onwards career support.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the right candidates to gain:

  • two years of specialist professional development;
  • personalised leadership coaching, alongside a senior leadership placement in an Alternative Provision school;
  • a network of the best in the sector at working with vulnerable learners;
  • an understanding of other agencies who support vulnerable families; and
  • a chance to pioneer pedagogy and build formative relationships to change the lives of London’s most vulnerable children.

Have you got what it takes?

Our problem

The most troubled children are excluded from school, from which point they have poor life chances and too often grow up to become vulnerable adults.

Why we exist:

  • To improve the life outcomes of the most vulnerable children by raising the status and expertise of those who educate them
  • We are creating a new generation of school leaders, specialist in improving outcomes for the most vulnerable children

Our programme

The two-year Difference Leaders programme recruits exceptional teachers to an SLT post in a Good or Outstanding PRU or AP academy. Across the two years, Difference Leaders are supported to deliver whole school improvement in pupil learning, wellbeing and safeguarding, through a specialist programme of expert training with a cross-London cohort, small-group supervision, and bespoke in-school coaching. At the end of the programme, Difference Leaders are accredited with an NPQSL and supported to find promotions in mainstream schools who want their knowledge to drive improved inclusive practice.

Did you know…?

  • Last year, less than 2% of excluded children achieved a good pass in English and maths GCSE.
  • The most vulnerable children get excluded: exclusions are linked to periods of poor pupil mental health, family involvement with social services and low literacy levels.
  • 1 in 10 state school pupils have interacted with social services. Specialist skills in working with vulnerable students are needed across the mainstream sector. Multi-academy trusts Ark and Oasis are already keen to hire the first generation of Difference Leaders, at the end of the two-year programme.
