Director of Education

St Helena Island, South Atlantic

3 years FTC commencing ASAP

£60k-£70k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, taxable in St Helena

A tax free International Supplement will also apply

A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. With the opening of a new international airport last October there is now a weekly scheduled flight from Johannesburg.

Education on St Helena is based broadly on the British system and the English national curriculum. There are four schools on the island; three primary plus one secondary. The training sector of the Education Directorate is responsible for the CPD of all teaching staff with a locally developed, internationally accredited programme, as well as accredited up-skilling training.  In addition, the St Helena Community College offers a wide range of lifelong learning opportunities to support the growing economy.

You will manage and develop the Directorate, introducing educational improvements and training opportunities, in line with the changing economic needs of the island. You will secure management succession arrangements, providing staff development programmes for senior management and staff.

As you review, develop and monitor implementation of the Directorate’s Strategic Plan, you will develop early year’s provision and monitor educational standards whilst supporting the development of links between schools and the local community and with overseas education partners. Taking full responsibility for the education budget you will identify efficiencies and implement revenue generating opportunities.

A natural and dynamic leader, you will have strong negotiating and influencing skills. Holding a degree in education with substantial education senior management experience, you will also have a clean vetting certificate. You will be extensively versed in current best practice in education management and approaches to school improvement, and you will have managed successful change programmes and processes.

We offer an extensive benefits package with 30 days leave pa, fare paid travel, freight, pension contribution and relocation allowance (see overseas vacancy information).

An application form can be found at www.sthelenacareers.co.uk where further information can also be found, or you may contact Kedell Worboys on 0203 818 7610 or email: shgukrep@sthelenagov.com. This is where applications must be sent and received by 17:00 GMT on Monday, 4 February 2019.

Interviews will be held in London on Monday, 18 February 2019.
