Varndean School has a proud history. It has undergone many changes to bring it to where it is now; starting life in the centre of Brighton in 1884 and moving to its current site in 1926. Since then the school has evolved into a vibrant and diverse co-education comprehensive school with a population of over 1400 students and nearly 200 staff which represents the local community it serves.

Varndean School is a place where people matter. We believe that individuality is very much an internal quality that we foster and encourage through the widest variety of learning experiences.

Our broad curriculum promotes academic rigour so that our students can stand shoulder to shoulder with their peers nationally. Varndean is one of the top performing secondary schools in Brighton and Hove. We are committed to creativity and have a huge passion for music, performance, the arts, sport and anything that challenges and encourages participation.

Our opportunities for extended learning are second to none with our arts provision, successful sports teams, the largest cohorts of DofE in the South East as well as our extensive enrichment and entitlement curriculum. We are the first state school in Brighton and Hove to become a  Directly Licensed Centre for DofE.

Varndean is a great place to learn and develop, in friendly, smaller and supportive environments. We are a really happy school where student relationships with each other, and staff, are excellent. We have a well established smaller school system each with its own identity: Angelou, Russell, Turing, Ellis and Lennox. Each school has a Head of School, a Deputy Head and a School Leader.

We have the highest aspirations for all of our students supported by highly trained and motivated experts in their fields. Our staff are the mainstay of our community. We provide huge opportunities for professional development and have a history of real success in creating visionary leaders and excellent practitioners.
