Job overview

Director of Music

September 2019

We seek an outstanding individual to lead this thriving and exceptional department.  Music forms an integral part of the broad curriculum and enjoys a very high profile within the school. Every pupil, from Reception to Year 4, receives two music lessons each week whilst pupils in Years 5-8 receive one lesson per week. In addition there is a large and highly qualified team of visiting instrumental staff teaching over 430 individual lessons per week.

There are five choirs, including the Boy and Girl Choristers who sing weekly services at St Mary’s Church and are regularly joined by professional adult singers. There are three Orchestras, a Jazz group, Brass Group, two Guitar Groups, Percussion Group, Music Theory Clubs, Music Technology Clubs, Music Appreciation Club, Flute Groups, Clarinet Group, Recorder Group, numerous Pupil Rock Bands and various chamber ensembles.

The department works closely with the Drama department to put on a number of musicals every year, in addition to its own busy schedule of weekly lunchtime concerts, music recitals, church services and evening events. Music commands a generous budget and is well housed in a new Music School which opened in May 2015.

Applicants should be suitably qualified, charismatic, enthusiastic and an inspirational teacher and leader with high expectations of pupils and staff. The successful candidate will be a first rate musician with excellent keyboard skills.

Competitive salary and conditions are offered.

Closing date: Wednesday 17th October 2018

Interviews to be held: W/C Monday 5th November 2018

Thomas’s Battersea aims to provide an outstanding education for young people aged 4 to 13 which is forward-thinking and outward looking, with a strong set of values at its heart. We aim to prepare pupils superbly not only for the next phase of their education, but also for their lives that lie beyond. Restlessly innovative, we strive to equip our pupils with the knowledge, the skills, the character and the self-understanding which will empower them not merely to survive, but to flourish and to thrive as the adults of tomorrow. We recognise the need to serve the current national educational system, with its disproportionate emphasis on outcomes. However, we firmly believe that outstanding examination results can be - must be - the by-product of a first-class, broad education, which meets the needs of the whole child - mind, body and soul. Education is about so much more than exam results. Above all, as our pupils in these formative years develop a growing sense of self, we seek to nurture in them a strong set of values, with kindness at the core, which will encourage them to take up positions of responsibility and leadership, to give back to their communities and to make a positive contribution to the world. Thomas’s Battersea is a well-established and highly regarded school for pupils aged 4 to 13. Pupils move on to a wide range of senior schools at the ages of 11 and at 13, as well as to Thomas’s Putney Vale, our own senior school, which currently admits pupils from Years 9 to 11.
