Job overview

The Malling School is looking to recruit a highly effective practitioner to lead a rapidly developing department as Director of Science. The successful applicant will have a proven track record in the classroom as well as experience of improving outcomes across the scientific disciplines.

The school is seeking to appoint a Director of Learning to join our school from January 2021. Candidates interested in this post are encouraged to visit our school and see us in action during a normal school day, if this is possible. We are extremely proud of our pupil’s outstanding behaviour, our caring teachers’ high standards and expectations for our children and the excellent learning happening at The Malling School.

The Malling School is an extremely positive, happy and caring place for young people to learn. We are a growing stand-alone foundation school and are very proud of our wonderful students and talented staff.

We are fully committed to continually developing our teaching at The Malling School. We have no formal lesson observations and a strong open culture of improving our teaching together through regular low stakes developmental learning walks and a constructive and supporting appraisal system. The development also includes weekly pedagogy-linked lecturettes and opportunities to work with peers on the development of effective teaching & learning practice. Leaders are also developed, with regular and supportive line management as well as a thorough programme of Middle Leadership meetings to further improve all aspects of practice.

Our strategy to improve outcomes for our students is not through short term unsustainable Y11 intervention but through developing our curriculum together and continually reflecting and improving our daily practice in every classroom for every year group.

We have a very strong behaviour for learning policy that means low-level disruption is not tolerated, allowing teachers to do what we do best- teach. All staff receive regular ‘positive behaviour support’  training to ensure we are consistent in our application of the policy. Students are very clear about our high expectations of behaviour and attitude in every classroom. The key to the success of the policy is the proactive targeting of poor work ethic and low-level disruption by every teacher. Students that slow down the pace of learning are transferred out of the lesson and collected by our Senior Leaders.

The leadership team ensures that all improvement strategies are clearly communicated to staff, effectively piloted, evaluated and well thought through. Our key principle when introducing any new initiative is to ensure that there is no unnecessary workload and that it has a high impact on student progress.

We can offer you:

• Opportunities to teach your specialist subject to GCSE and International Baccalaureate Level

• A modern school with outstanding facilities

• Robust behaviour systems to support effective learning

• No formal observations – instead Developmental Learning Walks with ongoing feedback, helping you and your department to continuously develop

• Ongoing professional development to support career progression

The ideal candidate will:

• Have a strong academic background with good A-levels or equivalent and a good degree

• The ability to teach Science to KS3 and GCSE is essential, the ability to teach beyond GCSE is preferable. Experience of the Key stage 5 International Baccalaureate is also desirable

• Innovative and reflective in your approach to teaching

• Able to achieve excellent examination results for children

• Be motivated by a desire to change lives for the better

• Have qualified teacher status

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and innovative teacher to lead a dedicated and supportive department.

The Malling School

A mixed 11-19 co-educational High School of 1000 pupils serving the historic market town of West Malling and surrounding villages. The school is set in pleasant rural surroundings and has its own lake and extensive grounds. It was completely re-built in September 2007 and therefore has outstanding facilities.

West Malling is close to the county town of Maidstone and has excellent rail links to London and Ashford International (for the Continent).

This is an exciting time to be joining the staff of The Malling School.

Our school is increasingly becoming the first choice school for parents. As a result we are currently oversubscribed. We have robust behavioural systems and Developmental Learning Walks, rather than formal observations. All of which allow a teacher to flourish and do what they do best – teach!

We provide a very supportive environment in which staff can further develop their skills and we ensure every new member of staff has access to a trained coach. With close teams of teachers and non-teachers working together we take a collaborative approach to school improvement and have a shared aim of providing the very best education for our pupils.
