Job overview

Director of Sport

The Role

We are inviting applications to the role of Director of Sport at an exciting time in the school’s development. The school is located on the outskirts of Bangkok, and is home to world class facilities that ranks with the best on offer in Bangkok including a full athletics track with a 300-seat grandstand, full-size 3G astro football pitch, covered 5-a-side football surface, two sports halls, tennis courts, an air-conditioned indoor swimming pool, indoor climbing wall and a range of indoor dance and gymnastic spaces. The school has also recently opened a fitness suite which caters for both aspiring and high performing athletes.

The school joined FOBISIA in 2022, and had an incredibly successful debut at the FOBISIA Games in November - something the incoming Director of Sport will look to build upon. Bangkok itself has a number of International Schools which means that DBS has a heavy involvement in fixtures and competitions in Basketball, Football, Athletics and Swimming, as well or other sports. The school is also a participant of the prestigious, annual Bangkok Games where our students compete against those at the best schools in the area.

The Director of Sport is responsible for matters of strategy regarding sport at DBS, and for the leadership and direction of sport. With the growth of the school, this role will allow the incoming postholder to have the opportunity to shape the future of sport at DBS. This role of Director of Sport represents an exciting and outstanding opportunity for the right candidate to enhance and diversify the sporting provision at the school, ensuring that both the needs and potential of all pupils are met.

The school has a focus on educating the whole child and, as such, Games plays an important role in the school week both in the curriculum and in the After-School Activities programme. In Years 3 to 6, all students are timetabled to two sessions of co-curricular sport per week, in addition to their curricular PE and swimming lessons. From Year 7 to Year 13, all students have one session per week in addition to their curricular PE (to Y9) and swimming lessons (to Y9). The Director of Sport is accountable for the leadership of co-curricular sport provision to ensure that students discover and develop their abilities and talents in the broadest sense.

The postholder will play the leading role in the development of the profile and effectiveness of sport for both boys and girls in line with the School’s overall aims, ethos and objectives. The Director of Sport, working with the House Leaders, will ensure that sports participation and competition within the DBS House system is effective, ensuring that there are regular high quality House fixtures in a wide variety of sports.

The person appointed may have significant experience in running one or more of the key sports within the School, and may well perform such a role alongside this position. We would also encourage former professionals to apply. The ability to work in close liaison with staff involved in the provision of the sports programme, both teaching and support staff, is essential.

The Director of Sport must subscribe fully to the core values of DBS, and understand how academic study, pastoral care and After-School Activities contribute equally within it. The Director of Sport will be responsible to the Deputy Head (Whole School).

The following will report directly to the Director of Sport: Head of PE; all Heads of individual sports; teachers taking teams and sports; all coaches such as tennis and swimming; sports LAs; and sports Administrators.

How to Apply

In order to apply, please consider the details of the Candidate Information Pack, complete all sections of the application form including the supporting statement that sets out your interest in this position, how you meet the requirements of the role and your ambitions for the school. Completed applications from School Portal by the closing date.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 8th January 2023 and applications will be considered upon receipt.

About Denla British School, Bangkok

Denla British School aims to nurture and develop great global leaders by developing knowledge, values and skills through our 5 pillars:

  • An enhanced British curriculum
  • Academic excellence for all
  • Entrepreneurship and creative thinking
  • Thai values in a global context
  • Wellbeing and sustainability

The School is currently enrolling students aged 2 – 17 (Pre-Nursery to Year 12) and this year is our first year of Year 13.

Our vision is “to nurture and develop great global leaders” and to provide an inspiring and caring environment in which students develop a lifelong passion for learning and fulfill their unique potential. Our DBS curriculum emphasises the development of knowledge, values and skills and is grounded in the National Curriculum for England whilst also incorporating the best elements of a variety of international curricula. It is enhanced by an extended school day and our holistic vision for learning. We emphasise the importance of academic rigour, whilst also recognising that learning is not the sole domain of the classroom. Our co-curricular programme of activities is therefore central to each student’s learning journey at DBS. During a regular day at school, for instance, students might find themselves calculating mathematical equations, practising a musical piece by Chopin, and participating in a debating competition. We believe that our enhanced curriculum will cultivate increased engagement, motivation, and enjoyment for students.

Our school campus is spread across 18 acres, complete with contemporary, state of the art buildings which includes a swimming pool, 3 sports halls, football pitch and athletics track, 600 seat auditorium, black box theatre, climbing wall, golf simulator fitness suite and much more! Students of all ages will benefit from an array of purpose-built, premium facilities that support our holistic educational vision.
