Director of Sport

We are seeking an inspirational and dynamic Director of Sport to form, shape and lead a thriving sports department on a full-time basis. The successful candidate will be expected to teach co-educational PE and there may also be the opportunity to contribute to the teaching of Academic PE. You will be a passionate advocate for sport and will be expected to lead the coaching of sports teams at after-school practices and fixtures. 

Specific Role 

Responsible for the leadership, direction and management of all sporting activity across the school (14 to 18).

Overall responsibilities include:

Development of an overall strategy and development plan for sport at MCJ

Review and development of the games programme, to ensure that we continue to allow choice and to offer different pathways to meet different pupil needs, from elite training for those seeking top level school and representative competition, through a strong team provision, to those whose focus is on health, wellbeing and exercise.

Liaison and communication, both internally and externally, to ensure the sports programme (including external fixture lists) is well-coordinated within a busy school calendar and well communicated to pupils, parents and staff.

Review and development of schemes of work for PE to promote the development of skills and understanding and to monitor the quality and effectiveness of the teaching and learning within the department.

Oversight of the academic provision of sport when established.

The day-to-day management of the facilities to ensure their best use and the liaison with and management of the support staff responsible for these facilities.

The professional development of staff, both departmental specialist and those non specialist staff who coach games and run teams and activities.

Liaison with the school’s communications team to ensure that sport is well represented in terms of publicity, marketing and social media output.

Development of links with external agencies, including national and county associations, clubs and sports organisations.

Development and maintenance of links with feeder schools and schools with whom we have partnerships.


Strategic Direction and Development 

Create a vision for the Department and prepare, in consultation with colleagues, a departmental development plan which supports the vision and furthers the College Development Plan; in addition, to monitor and review the implementation of the departmental development plan. 

Analyse examination results and prepare an annual Departmental Review and to set and monitor targets for departmental development in close liaison with the Deputy Head Academic and to prepare for and respond effectively to the recommendations of Departmental Internal Reviews. 

Embed College and departmental aims and policies in departmental schemes of work.

Leadership, Management and Organisation 

Lead and manage the Department in order that high performance standards are achieved, recruiting, inducting, developing, deploying, motivating and appraising members of the department; to establish clear expectations of teachers and offer appropriate development opportunities. 

Manage efficiently vital routine administration (examinations, cover, etc.). 

Identify, in liaison with the Deputy Head Academic, the training needs required for departmental development and to promote the professional development of teachers in line with departmental and College aims. 

Make effective use of departmental meetings to improve teaching and learning and to ensure that actions are recorded and implemented. 

Create departmental documentation of high quality (Departmental Handbook, Schemes of Work, Subject Information, etc.) and to develop a vibrant presence on the MCJ media channels.

Prepare and monitor a budget to support high quality teaching and learning. 

Ensure that the department is a safe, well ordered and stimulating environment in which to teach and learn.  

Criteria for the Appointment: Essential 

Possess a degree in Sport or a related subject; 

Demonstrate the ability to teach GCSE and A Level; 

Demonstrate an innovative and imaginative approach to teaching and learning, showing the capability to deliver inspirational and informative lessons to a variety of age ranges and abilities; 

Demonstrate a capacity to lead and develop colleagues; 

Demonstrate a willingness to take the lead in developing the department’s co-curricular activities and raising the profile of the Department in College life; 

Be able to demonstrate a positive and authoritative rapport with all students, showing excellent and effective classroom management skills; 

Show excellent communication skills to enable effective dialogue with students, parents, staff and visitors; 

Be organised and self-motivated, with a proven record for meeting targets and deadlines; 

Have a sharp and progressive vision of the subject and of teaching and learning in a successful and dynamic school; 

Display an ability to perform well and remain professional whilst under pressure, be tactful and discreet, whilst mindful of observing Safeguarding and professional standards;

Be committed to boarding school life and willing to engage in a range of co-curricular activities; 

Demonstrate a strong commitment to personal continuous professional development; 

Display a smart and professional appearance, representing the College in a positive manner.
