UWCSEA has a vacancy for August 2020 or earlier at its East Campus for a Director of Teaching and Learning. The role of Director of Teaching and Learning is a senior appointment at Principal level with a core function to lead, with School Principals, on the implementation, monitoring, evaluation and development of the UWCSEA learning programme from K–12. It will be essential to establish a strong working partnership with the Director of Teaching and Learning on our sister UWCSEA Dover campus. These two post holders lead research and development of the best educational practices for all aspects of our holistic curriculum. This includes the line management of research and development as well as the project leadership of identified K–12 initiatives and programme developments.

The Director of Teaching and Learning reports to the Head of Campus and is a member of the East Campus Leadership team (ELT) and the College Learning Leadership team (LLT) which ensure strategic unity of purpose and foster a culture of cooperation within the Campus and the College as a whole.

Knowledge and Experience

Person specification

  • a degree and professional teaching qualification is essential: a higher degree desirable

  • awareness of current issues and trends in education—an ability to lead
    institutional thinking and high quality professional learning

  • ability to develop a sense of community, generate trust and build influence with all constituent groups
  • understanding of leadership approaches to maintaining the highest standards of instruction and evaluating the impact of a learning programme

  • fluency in English and excellent communication skills: written, spoken and in presentations
  • outstanding interpersonal skills: a good listener with a collaborative
    management style

Academic expectations

  • the post holder demonstrates the willingness and eagerness to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: academic, personal and social education (PSE), service, activities, and outdoor education
  • enthusiastic participation in Professional Learning, both that which is mandated by the College and that which is identified by the individual
  • on average the College expects a yearly contribution of two sessions per week in each season to activities and/or service
  • the College expects that teachers will participate enthusiastically in the curricular outdoor education experiences which are relevant to their students and will also occasionally volunteer for holiday outdoor education trips.
  • applicants should be enthusiastic about teaching within a multicultural
    environment; flexibility of approach and a collaborative style are essential

 

Responsibilities

The incumbent will work with Principals, Vice Principals, learning teams and
individuals to:

  • oversee and support the implementation, alignment and strategic development of the learning programme through strong pedagogical practices and effective assessment and reporting
  • support the development of K–12 teaching and learning initiatives and
    programme developments as identified in the Campus Strategic Plan
    (e.g., Concept Based Teaching and Learning, Home Languages, EAL, Learning Data, Leadership training) by engaging with teams at all levels across the College
  • take a leading and active role in promoting professional learning on Campus, Chair Professional Learning committee and manage associated budgets aligned to the Campus Strategic Plan
  • oversee and support areas of the learning programme that are organized across school sections: for example (to be agreed) libraries, student services, outdoor education, PSE, service and sustainable development, activities, home languages programme and K–12 academic teams
  • lead the development and alignment of the process for collecting and analyzing student data to provide effective tracking systems which support both targeted interventions and the capacity to make high level predictions of academic outcomes
  • further develop and implement effective methods to record and report
    achievement across all five elements of the learning programme
  • work with the Director of Teaching and Learning (Dover), the Heads of Campus, the Head of Curriculum Development and Research, the Director of Information Technology and the Head of Digital Learning to further develop strategic and effective digital learning systems that align planning, assessment, recording and reporting across the campus and, where relevant, across the College
  • work with Head of Campus and Principals to implement the Campus
    Development Plan and to review and further develop the strategic progress of the Campus
  • contribute to the Learning Leadership Team as a part of College strategic
    development
  • work as a part of the Learning Leadership Team, engage with colleagues and peers beyond UWCSEA through a variety of interpersonal and social media connections to build rapport, understanding and connection, to ensure that the College maintains a high profile amongst educational thought leadership (e.g., UWC International, sister UWCs globally, Sky School, IBO, EARCOS, PTC, CIS)
  • lead the process of readiness, accreditation and review associated with CIS/ WASC, maintain currency of knowledge and exposure to the accreditation process as it evolves
  • at the discretion of the Head of Campus teach up to 4 periods/week
