Job overview

Exeter School is the leading co-educational day school in the South West, educating over 940 pupils aged 7-18. Situated on a 25-acre site near the city centre, our strong links to the local community, well-established pastoral care systems and fantastic teaching enable us to challenge, inspire and deliver the very best learning to our pupils.

We are looking to appoint a Drama and AV Technician with effect from 1 September or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Drama and AV Technician will be multi-skilled, ideally with a lighting and/or sound specialism. The technician will be expected to play an important role in delivering a high quality, safe and creative experience for our pupils across drama within the school and in addition, will provide high-quality AV support and media creation across the school.

The right person for this post will have a broad understanding and experience of technical support to theatre in schools, including managing resources, equipment, materials, tools and technology. They will be able to set up and manage technical resources for performance, supervise pupils supporting the technical side of performances, organise and maintain stock and equipment, and take responsibility for health and safety in their environment.

Competent and confident use of IT is essential, including basic skills and experience in Microsoft Word, Excel and either Publisher or PowerPoint and experience of photo and video editing and production software.

Furthermore, it is important that the Drama and AV Technician will be able to communicate well with pupils from ages 11 to 18 and develop a rapport with them.

Specific qualifications, experience and/or training should be made clear on your application, and all will be advantageous in the application process. The school is willing to provide access to training courses for the successful candidate.

This is a permanent, full-time position, term time only (including inset days) – actual working hours by mutual agreement.  Some flexibility will be required as the post holder will need to complete some out of hours work when supporting events and activities (e.g. dramatic or musical performances) and may be required to work additional days in the school holidays. Additional time worked will be on a TOIL basis.

The role will attract a salary of £20,102 (FTE £25,908), depending on experience, as well as generous benefits including free school lunch during term time, free on-site parking, access to school sporting facilities, an 8% employer contribution to the school’s approved pension scheme and membership of SimplyHealth plan.

The closing date for applications is midday Monday 13 June. Interviews will be held week commencing Monday 20 June.  However, candidates may be shortlisted for interview as applications are received, so early application is highly recommended.

A fully completed Exeter School application form should be uploaded to TES with a covering letter.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and responsibility.  Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

All staff working in the school during the school day will have some contact with children and will therefore be in regulated activity. In your role you are likely to be regularly working directly with, and be responsible for, children in your care.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the school is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions (including those which are "spent" unless they are "protected" under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.
