This is an exciting, challenging and rewarding opportunity for an experienced and successful Head Teacher.

Experience of working in a culturally diverse school or academy is not essential, nor is experience of working in an all through setting. Trustees are looking for a successful and inspirational leader who has the vision, skills and commitment to lead Excelsior into the future.

Excelsior, the first Academy to form Laidlaw Schools Trust (LST) a multi academy trust that includes four local primaries and another all through academy. All of our schools are in close proximity to Excelsior Academy and are currently located within Newcastle and Sunderland.

Excelsior Academy is state of the art, purpose built all through academy, which opened in September 2008 as Newcastle's first academy. Located near good transport routes including the A1, Newcastle Airport, Newcastle city centre and within easy reach of picturesque Northumberland and the north east coast.

Initially an 11-19 provision, Excelsior expanded in September 2013 to become all through admitting pupils in Reception and Year 1, and then further expanded to include Nursery provision from January 2015.

Based on a Schools within a School model Excelsior's unique structure and organisation has proven to be successful in raising standards in all aspects of academy life.

The successful candidate will join an established MAT where all academies support each other to the benefit of our pupils and their families. Our academies also enjoy strong support from an experienced LST central team, based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Excelsior Academy is an all-through school located in Newcastle, Tyne and Wear. The school was first established in 2008, as a secondary school and sixth form (later split into three separate schools), and in 2012 it was decided that the school would merge with a local primary school, creating a new school for pupils aged 3-19. With around 1200 pupils, Excelsior Academy is larger than the average secondary school, and covers a culturally and economically diverse catchment area, a fact reflected in the school’s intake.

Principal

James Andriot

Values and Vision

Excelsior Academy works hard in order to ensure that the transition of pupils from primary to secondary provision is as smooth and non-disruptive as possible. As a relatively young school, it is able to make extensive use of a wide range of modern facilities and learning resources, and offer a diverse and far-reaching curriculum, with older pupils having numerous academic and vocational qualifications to choose from. Excelsior Academy also works hard to provide for pupils with special educational needs.

Ofsted

“Students are most enthusiastic about the academy and talk about being ‘privileged’ to have so many opportunities. They say that they particularly like the fact that they are respected and listened to. The percentage of students gaining five good passes at GCSE, including English and mathematics, has risen by an average of six percentage points each year since the academy opened in 2008. This was from a very low baseline.”
