Job overview

General Secretary

Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL)

HQ in Leicester, with flexible working arrangements.

Frequent travel across the UK required.

Competitive salary.

The Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) is a leading professional body and trade union representing more than 24,000 members across the UK. ASCL’s members include trust leaders, headteachers, principals, vice-principals, deputy and assistant headteachers, and business leaders, of state-funded and independent schools and colleges. They are responsible for the education of more than four million young people in more than 90% of secondary schools and colleges, and in an increasing number of primary schools. ASCL provides high-quality advice and support to its members, delivers first-class professional development, and works to influence national education policy on behalf of children and young people.

ASCL’s General Secretary, Geoff Barton, has indicated his wish to retire from the post in April 2024, following what will be seven years of outstanding service to the organisation. ASCL Council, the association’s policy-making body of elected members, is seeking a successor who will build on ASCL’s record of success and work with them to meet a range of priorities facing ASCL in the coming years.

Candidates for the role will bring senior leadership experience, knowledge of the UK educational landscape and a good understanding of how to run an organisation. Whilst leadership experience of schools, colleges and/or trusts would be desirable, it is not a pre-requisite if candidates bring other experience relevant to the leadership of a trade union, professional association or membership organisation. Candidates will be comfortable operating in the public domain, be excellent at building stakeholder relationships and have a clear view on how modern 21st century trade unions and professional bodies should operate.
