Loretto School is one of Britain’s leading independent boarding and day schools located on the outskirts of Edinburgh and we have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Geography specialist to join our teaching team to provide maternity cover for the forthcoming academic year.

This role requires an enthusiastic and passionate teacher, who is committed to a high quality of learning and teaching and to providing an engaging and inspiring experience for our pupils. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for learning and teaching of pupils in their classes, employing effective pedagogy and using their skills and experience to enable pupils to become successful learners and achieve their potential in the subject.

Of paramount importance is a passion for the subject and a desire to share this with our pupils. You will be a qualified teacher, able to teach to GCSE and A-Level standard and either registered, or eligible to be registered, with the General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS). In addition, you will have:

  • the ability to plan, prepare and deliver creative and challenging lessons to all stages;
  • ability to develop and deliver a comprehensive field study programme;
  • an interest in using innovative teaching methods, including ICT, to enhance learning and teaching.
  • the ability to create useful resources to contribute to class teaching and departmental development.
  • good organisational skills and punctuality.
  • the ability to work well as part of a team and to share ideas with colleagues


However, the role is more than just classroom teaching. Here at Loretto, we strive to know and nurture all of our pupils helping them to develop into knowledgeable, capable and confident young adults. All staff are expected to contribute fully to the School’s extensive academic, pastoral, and co-curricular programmes. The academic, pastoral, and co-curricular timetable includes teaching on Saturday mornings along with weekend and evening duties.

Salary will be determined by experience and aptitude for the role. In addition, as recognition of the contribution to the co-curriculum programme, a further salary allowance is also paid.
