Job overview

Graduate Assistant Teacher (Games)

We are looking for an enthusiastic graduate who is able to offer games coaching in a variety of sports, most notably netball and hockey.

This one year post offers an opportunity for a recent graduate to gain extensive and worthwhile working experience in a friendly independent school, supporting the PE and Games departments and being involved in the provision of sport throughout the School.

The post will be particularly attractive to any graduate considering a career in education. The work would be varied and the variety would, to some extent, be determined by the personality, enthusiasm and skills of the individual appointed. However, we anticipate that the Graduate Assistant would be:

· Experienced in playing or coaching hockey or netball

· Confident/able to coach an umpire both sports

· Prepared to contribute to the programme of Saturday fixtures

· Prepared to be involved in extra-curricular activities and  trips

· Able to communicate effectively

· Able to take responsibility and make decisions

· Adaptable and calm under pressure

· Committed and hard-working

· Educated to a degree level

The successful applicant would be attached to an academic department, and there will be opportunity to teach some lessons under the guidance of the Head of Department. Therefore this post should be a successful springboard for those considering teaching as a career.

Chigwell School is located in the picturesque village of Chigwell just 10 miles from central London and on the Central Line. Close to the edge of Epping Forest, we enjoy over 100 acres of beautiful grounds. As well as being an academic school, it has a growing reputation, locally and nationally, for its sport, music and drama. We endeavour to provide an all-round education to girls and boys from the ages of four to eighteen years (Pre-Prep Reception–Year 2, Junior School Years 3-8 and Senior School Years 9-13). Pupils are enthusiastic, co-operative and able, and colleagues get on well together. There is a well-developed sense of community.

Although Chigwell is predominantly a day school but there are some thirty Sixth Form boarders who are mainly from overseas; from a dozen or so different countries. They add a real international flavour to our community.

Further details can be found on the School website (see www.chigwell-school.org). Informal enquiries or visits are welcome.

Application is by a form which can be completed online or downloaded from our website (select Vacancies) and submitted by email to the Headmaster's PA; hmpa@chigwell-school.org not any later than 18th June 2018.

Values and vision

Chigwell School’s motto is: “aut viam inveniam aut faciam”, a Latin phrase which means literally, “Either I shall find a way or I will make one". In-keeping with this, the school wants its students to develop a “determined, independent spirit, taking responsibility for themselves, their relationships with others, and the world around us”.

The school defines its mission as aiming to cultivate a learning community that aspires to excellence in all aspects of life, including: spiritual intellectual, moral, cultural, social and emotional aspects.

Chigwell School aims to provide a rounded education in the broadest sense, encouraging pupils to develop and discover talents and interests across and beyond the curriculum in order to help them to play a full part in the life of the school, and go on to make a positive contribution to the world.

The school hopes to be a community in which pupils develop a love of learning and are challenged to think critically, and with creative curiosity, for themselves.
