Job overview

The Governors of Halstead School are seeking to appoint a new Head for our thriving preparatory school for September 2020 on the retirement of Mrs Penny Austin, Headmistress since 2013.

Halstead Preparatory School is an independent, day school, located in Woking, Surrey.  Founded in 1927, Halstead specialises in the education of girls aged 2 to 11 years. A strong sense of community, warm rapport between staff, parents and girls and respect for others is part of everyday life and reflects our Christian ethos. Through excellent teaching in a nurturing environment every Halstead girl is encouraged to believe in herself and it is our belief that by presenting her with every possible opportunity along the way she will develop into a confident, happy and successful individual who looks back with many fond memories of her prep school years.

With no affiliation to any one senior school we work with parents to ensure that their daughter progresses to the school that is right for her at age eleven and preparation for entrance examinations is thorough. Halstead girls have a long history of success evidenced by the number of first-choice places and the many scholarships awarded.

With a proven background of leadership and senior management, preferably in the Preparatory/Primary school sector, the successful candidate will show warmth, confidence and good communication skills.  Compassion and empathy will be key attributes, along with an approachability to pupils, parents and staff alike.  Halstead School is looking for a fair, kind and enthusiastic Head.  There are exciting opportunities to build upon the excellent legacy of the present Headmistress and the many successes enjoyed in recent years, whilst preserving and embracing the school’s family ethos.

The new Head will take over a financially sound school that continues to invest in its development.

Remuneration will be commensurate with the seniority of the post and the experience of the successful candidate.

To arrange a school tour and obtain an application pack please contact the Bursar, Mrs Tracy Beard by emailing recruitment@halstead-school.org.uk

Closing date for applications: 9am, Monday 4th November 2019

Halstead Prep School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  Applicants will be required to undergo safeguarding screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

About Halstead St Andrew's School (Woodham Rise)

Nestled away in a leafy suburb and yet minutes from the centre of Woking sits Halstead. Halstead is a vibrant and caring school where girls can thrive and truly be themselves. The Nursery and Reception provision are excellent. Girls benefit from specialist teaching in music, dance, drama, PE and gym from dedicated and well-qualified staff who know each child as an individual. The small class sizes and dynamic yet family feel, ensures that girls explore and challenge themselves in their learning and meet their potential in a secure and nurturing environment.

Halstead also puts itself in a rather unique position to other independent preparatory schools in the area – that of being an all-girls school. For Sharon Maher, who arrived September 2020 to lead Halstead from a highly successful all-girls preparatory school in London, she makes no apologies for her passion for, and belief in a single sex education. “Our girls are happy, bubbly, confident and well rounded, and the single sex learning environment allows them to be themselves, to feed their hunger for learning and immerse themselves in whatever subjects excite and inspire them the most”.
