Job overview

Tes are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspirational Head of Art & Design on a full-time fixed term basis from January 2022, to cover a maternity. This role is not suitable for NQTs.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving young independent day school for boys aged 11-18 situated in the heart of London. Since opening in 2015 the School has quickly grown to around 400 boys and, following on from strong GCSE results, this summer they celebrated the success of their first A Level pupils who took up places at some of the most competitive universities in the UK, Europe and North America.

Their vision is to provide an outstanding, progressive all-round education, supporting pupils to achieve academically and to develop as people, fully preparing them to meet the challenges of being a young man in the twenty-first century and ready to contribute to the communities in which they live.

Academic excellence is central to the school, complemented by their aim to nurture genuine enjoyment of learning and intellectual curiosity.  Their pupils take pride in their progress, actively participate in their learning in the classroom and gradually become independent learners. The school was highly successful in delivering remote learning and now has e-learning embedded in the curriculum.

The department is made up of two teachers and a part-time art technician. They meet weekly to discuss departmental and school-wide issues and share good teaching and learning practice. They are a happy department who all enjoy their jobs and working together; there is a supportive atmosphere and decisions about best practice are taken collaboratively. All staff participate fully in the pastoral and cocurricular life of the School.

The Successful Candidate:

  • The ability to inspire others and lead by example;
  • Outstanding subject knowledge, academic qualifications and the ability to communicate their enthusiasm;
  • Secure art and graphic design skills in a range of different media, including manual and digital techniques, as well as a desire to learn and master new media when the need arises;
  • The ability to deliver dynamic and effective lessons to the full ability range of pupils at the School;
  • Experience in teaching Art and Design from KS3-5, including the marking of GCSE and A Level work;
  • Some experience of successful management of or within an academic department;
  • Highly effective communication skills for dealing with all members of the School community;
  • A commitment to pastoral care and the welfare and safeguarding of pupils;
  • Interests and abilities that can enhance the School’s co-curricular programme;
  • Excellent inter-personal skill;
  • Excellent administrative, organisational and IT skills.
