Job overview

Westholme School, established in 1923, is a successful independent school located on the rural outskirts of Blackburn. The school is based across 3 sites, providing a first class education to around 800 pupils, aged 3 months - 18 years.  The School is well resourced and facilities across the entire campus are extensive and stimulating, as a result of the Governors’ wise investment plan.  Over the last decade over £10M has been spent on capital projects and our students benefit from the all-encompassing provision.    The school will become fully co-educational in September 2018, although for the transitional year 2018-19, boys and girls will continue to be taught separately in Year 8 and for core subjects in Year 11. Westholme also has a Nursery, Infant School and the Junior School on separate sites. This position will be based in the Senior School.

Following the promotion of the current post-holder to another school, we seek a well-qualified, dedicated and inspirational graduate to lead this successful and highly committed department across the school.  The successful candidate will join a friendly and supportive team of two part-time and four full-time teachers, with support from a variety of specialist coaches and other staff.  The successful applicant would be required to teach across the full age range (3 – 18 years) and an ability to teach GCSE and A Level is essential.  The school has a thriving co-curricular programme and the post involves regular after-school and Saturday morning commitments.

Boys and girls are generally taught separately for Physical Education and games throughout Years 3-10 with a more varied activity programme in Year 11 and Sixth Form.  Sport is an integral and successful part of Westholme life.  The School has a number of successful teams across a wide range of sports at both local and national level in all age ranges.   The Department is well equipped and resourced with outdoor pitches, a flood-lit all weather pitch, sports hall, fitness suite and drama/dance studio and 20m indoor swimming pool.  The Junior and Infant sites have their own small facilities but also use those at Senior School.  Physical Education is a popular choice at both GCSE and A Level.  There is a strong sporting heritage at Westholme and this post offers considerable opportunity for wider scope and further development.  Boys were admitted to Senior School for the first time in 2012 and over the last 6 years, as numbers have grown, so has the sporting provision and success.
