Job overview

Following retirement, we are seeking to appoint a new Head of Computing and ICT. With a passion for your subject, you will lead your department to teach to the highest of standards, as well as contributing support and training throughout the School.

A small yet vibrant department, it is known for its pedagogy, staff development, breadth of co-curricular opportunities and academic success, which is always keen to respond to individual interests and enthusiasms.

A popular subject we currently have 80 boys studying each year at GCSE and two sets at each year in A Level, a further 120 opt to study in Year 9.

We enjoy many collaborative relationships with external technology companies, in addition to the wider OH community who continue to coach and support our boys.

As a Head of Department, you will contribute to the wider strategic development of the School, including a new Digital Strategy across all of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Schools in Elstree.

The post would suit an experienced teacher or someone wishing to move into the independent sector. You will have a commitment to your own and your teams ongoing professional development.

Haberdashers' Boys' School is a large independent school located in the village of Elstree, Hertfordshire. Founded in 1690, the all-through school educates around 1,200 boys aged 5-18, all of whom are day pupils.

The School has a selective admissions policy, with prospective students for the senior school expected to pass entrance exams across a range of subjects. The best-performing boys are interviewed to ascertain their suitability for a place at the School. Entrance to the pre-prep and prep departments is also selective, with assessed playgroup sessions and exams used depending on the boy’s age.

Teaching staff

The members of the School's teaching staff are drawn from a wide range of backgrounds and reflect the diversity within Habs. There is a strong sense of community within the common rooms, which are harmonious and dynamic places where staff work hard in a collaborative and purposeful atmosphere. There is a growing international dimension to the work of staff with regular visits overseas and links with the best schools across the globe.

Support for staff at every stage of their career is exceptional, with one of the foremost and forward-thinking professional development plans in the country. Pedagogy and teacher development takes a collaborative approach which is both voluntary and open-minded.  Many teaching staff attend Learning Lunches where their peers will demonstrate new developments or ideas with which they have been experimenting.  In addition, teachers can request specific training which is often run in well attended Twilight Training sessions at the end of a school day.  The School operates an ‘open door’ approach with teachers regularly observing and learning from each other.
