Job Description

Department: DIS Secondary School
Reports to:  Senior Leadership Team

Purpose of the Job

To ensure that the teaching of PE throughout the school is of the highest quality and that students make good progress.

Key Responsibilities (Specific)

  • Provide professional leadership to a small team of teachers and support staff in the delivery of the full range of PE teaching.
  • Develop innovative, non-traditional approaches to the PE curriculum in order to ensure appropriate access and achievement for all students.
  • Manage the resources of the PE department within the limits of the delegated budget and in accordance with the school’s financial procedures.

Departmental:

  • Work in conjunction with the school’s strategic plan in moving the school forward.
  • Carry out data analysis and chart student progress.
  • Incorporate Gifted and Talented into your department.
  • Carry out departmental appraisals and ‘Learning Walks’ with SLT.
  • Contribute to School Self Evaluation.
  • To be able to lead across the whole school.
  • Ensure all department members act in a professional manner in and out of the classroom.

Additional Responsibilities:

To lead by example:

  • Demonstrating teaching skills which lead to excellent results and outcomes.
  • Demonstrating excellent and innovative pedagogical practice.
    Contributing significantly, where appropriate, to implementing workplace policies and practice and promoting collective responsibility for their implementation.
  • Contributing to the professional development of colleagues through coaching and mentoring, demonstrating effective practice, and providing advice and feedback. 
  • Staying up-to-date with current teaching strategies/methodologies, NC developments etc.

Administration Duties:

  • Curriculum management and review.
  • Teaching and learning development and monitoring.
  • Professional development within department.
  • Transition across year groups and from primary to secondary.
  • Monitoring pupil progress.
  • Report checking and monitoring.
  • Pupil discipline.
  • Cross-curricular development.
  • Teacher allocation, rooming etc.
  • Department ‘budget’, resources etc.
  • Contribute to the school newsletter.
  • Update school website.

Appointment

The Head of Department is appointed as Position of Leadership.

Appraisal/Review Conditions

The appointee to this position will be required to undergo a yearly Professional Review with a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Variable Duties/Hours

The Head of Department participates fully in the total life of the School.

The nature of the position is such that the Head of Department may be required to be available outside “normal” school hours.
