Job overview

Head of Economics & Business

September 2021 or January 2022

Are you a creative and inspiring teacher able to lead two well-established departments to further success? Our Economics and Business departments need an experienced and forward thinking leader to support our Economics and Business students and staff.

Royal Russell is an HMC/IAPS co-educational school with over 1100 students between the ages of 3 and 18, situated on a beautiful green campus of 110 acres in the Shirley Hills near Croydon on the doorstep of London. We have over 180 boarding students in the Senior School, and are proud of our wonderful day and boarding facilities which are being developed further in our ambitious site master plan.  Our students, parents and staff experience a warm and friendly environment with strong pastoral care for every student alongside a comprehensive co-curricular and enrichment programme. We aim to build on this alongside continued academic success to be the family school of choice in South London. In March 2016 the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) judged the school as ‘excellent’ in all areas and in October 2019 we successfully passed a full unannounced ISI compliance inspection.

Economics is a popular subject in our flourishing Sixth Form with between 30 and 40 students drawn both from local and international areas studying the subject in each year group, with a large proportion going on to study economics degrees at Russell Group Universities. Familiarity and experience of teaching Edexcel A level Economics is highly desirable.

Business is also a popular subject at GCSE and in the Sixth Form with GCSE Business Studies taught in all option blocks of the KS4 timetable. In the Sixth Form we offer Edexcel Business A level and BTEC Diploma courses with great success.

You will be enthusiastic and energetic in your approach and have a deep-rooted knowledge of Economics and Business enabling you to build upon the successes already enjoyed by the department. Our ideal candidate will have a strong university degree in an Economics or a Business-related subject, the ability to communicate with and lead a team of teachers as well as being an inspirational and forward-thinking practitioner. The Economics and Business Studies department consists of a team of 7 teachers who teach across both disciplines and qualifications.

A willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular programme and support the pastoral life of our School is essential.

Royal Russell offers excellent benefits including a competitive salary on our own salary scale which is above SNS and includes allowances for specific pastoral and academic responsibilities and a market rate for recruitment. As part of the vibrant community of the historic Royal Russell School, you will work in our beautiful green parkland estate with easy access to transport links. Teachers automatically join the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), or you may opt into an alternative defined contribution pension with free life cover on a promoted salary scale. In addition you will have access to free car parking, free meals, a discount on School fees, and the use of our sporting and gym facilities. Full details of our staff benefits and recruitment procedures can be found on our School recruitment page at: https://www.royalrussell.co.uk/our-school/vacancies

Applications will be considered on receipt and should arrive no later than 9.00am on Tuesday 11 May 2021 with the initial selection interview being held on Monday 17th May 2021. If you have not heard from us by Friday 14 May 2021 you should presume that you have not been successful on this occasion. We reserve the right to interview at any point during the recruitment process so early applications are encouraged.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All appointments are subject to a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (including a check against the Children’s Barred List) and other pre-employment screening including a check on the Secretary of State list of prohibited staff.
