Job overview

Head of Economics

Are you a dynamic and ambitious personality able to lead a well-established department of 3 colleagues to further success?

Royal Russell is an HMC/IAPS co-educational school with over 1000 students between the ages of 3 and 18, situated on a beautiful green campus of 110 acres in the Shirley Hills near Croydon yet is on the doorstep of London. We have over 150 boarding students in the Senior School, and are proud of our wonderful day and boarding facilities which are being developed further in our ambitious site master plan. Our students, parents and staff experience a warm and friendly environment with strong pastoral care for every student alongside a comprehensive co-curricular and enrichment programme. We aim to build on this alongside continued academic success to be the family school of choice in South London. The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) has recently judged the school as ‘excellent’ in all areas.

Economics is a popular subject in our flourishing Sixth Form with between 30 and 40 students drawn both from local and international areas studying the subject in each year group, with a large proportion going on to study economics or business-related degrees at Russell Group Universities.

You will be enthusiastic and energetic in your approach and have a deep-rooted knowledge of the subject enabling you to build upon the successes already enjoyed by the department. Our ideal candidate will have a strong university degree in Economics or a Business-related subject, the ability to communicate with and lead a team of teachers as well as being an inspirational and forward-thinking practitioner. Familiarity with the EdExcel specification at A Level is desirable. The start date for this appointment is September 2018 but a later date may be negotiated for exceptional candidates

A willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular programme and support the pastoral life of our school is essential. The Royal Russell pay scale which is above SNS, includes a generous allowance for suitably qualified and experienced staff and a market rate for recruitment. Allowances are available for specific pastoral and academic responsibilities.

We offer excellent benefits which include free lunch, free car parking, use of on-site tennis courts, gym and swimming pool. Staff are also entitled to 50% discount on School fees (pro-rata for part time/term time staff).

A fully completed application form which includes a supporting statement outlining the extent to which you meet our requirements as set out in the person specification, and details of two referees, one of which should be a current or most recent employer should be emailed to hr@royalrussell.co.uk. References may be taken up before interview. Applications will be considered on receipt and should arrive no later than 12 noon on Monday 18th June 2018. However we reserve the right to interview at any point during the recruitment process and early applications are encouraged. Short listed candidates will be contacted by telephone about the selection process. If you have not heard from us by Wednesday 20th June 2018 you should presume that you have not been successful on this occasion.
