Head of Economics

King's College London Mathematics SchoolLambeth North, Central London

King’s College London Mathematics School (KCLMS) is for highly motivated students aged 16-19 with a particular aptitude and enthusiasm for mathematics.

The school is seeking to appoint a dynamic and inspirational teacher to teach Economics and help to realise the vision and ambitions for the school. This represents an exciting opportunity for an innovative teacher to work with enthusiastic, high-attaining students, including those interested to study Economics at university.

Economics at King’s College London Mathematics School is unique for one important reason: every student studying the subject is also studying mathematics to a high level. This presents unique opportunities for the teaching of the subject, enabling a more quantitative approach. It is also an incredibly valuable choice for students taking otherwise highly numerate and calculation-based subjects, as through the study of Economics they develop a wider skillset alongside a deeper understanding of the world around them.

The appointed candidate will teach AS Economics to those students who choose this subject on enrolment to KCLMS. They will also be invited to teach a range of optional year 13 courses as part of “Curriculum X”, the school’s programme of optional extension that encourages curiosity and challenge as students prepare for university level study. Curriculum X courses in Economics currently draw on the most relevant content from the A2 Economics syllabus without being bound by it.

There are usually two Economics classes of students in year 12 each year. The appointed person will be the sole teacher of Economics and will therefore take on the Head of Department responsibilities also. These teaching and leadership aspects amount to 60% of a full-time teaching member of staff’s load, but for the right candidate there may be additional responsibilities that might increase the part-time proportion for example by being a form tutor, taking on the Head of Year responsibility currently advertised by the school, or, for the appropriately qualified candidate, by teaching lessons in another area of the curriculum.

The successful candidate will have strong academic credentials, and, whilst they may be new to the teaching profession, they will already have a proven record of outstanding teaching. A vital qualification will be that they share the vision of the school to help young people with a particular aptitude for mathematics find challenge and excitement in a curriculum that fosters intellectual growth and curiosity.

The post will commence from 1 September 2021.
