We are seeking a Head of Engineering to join our successful and rapidly growing 14-19 STEM college where courses are delivered at GCSE, Diploma and A Level.  We offer a broad and rich programme of academic enrichment for our students to follow within our brand new, purpose built building.  We have a wide range of fantastic equipment and facilities and work closely with our employer partners.

We are looking for someone who will secure excellent rates of student progress, is confident and a highly organised team player. You must have a good sense of humour and be able to take the initiative. You will need to be resilient, versatile and autonomous. The successful applicant will be responsible for planning and leading programmes of study and assessment in their areas of expertise.

Purpose (Subject leader)

Formulating the aims and objectives of engineering and establishing the policies through which these shall be achieved:

  • lead learning, teaching and curriculum development in engineering to oversee the self-evaluation including the development and implementation of a Subject Improvement Plan
  • to contribute to whole college self-evaluation
  • developing and enhancing the teaching practices of engineering and design technology members in line with the college's Learning and Teaching Policy
  • ensuring team cohesion and effectiveness with a focus on learning and learning to learn 
  • to ensure that programmes of study and schemes of work are complete, detailed  and up to date. All courses are designed to take advantage of the contributions offered by our employer partners. Support the AP with evaluation of available courses and the introduction of new courses
  • developing assessment for learning as a means of raising levels of attainment
  • setting targets for engineering: setting targets for teachers, teaching groups and individual students in engineering
  • to monitor progress against targets at group and individual student level
  • devising, monitoring and implementing appropriate interventions designed to redress areas of underachievement
  • supporting subject teachers in meeting targets

To ensure all health and safety policies and procedures are adhered to, kept up to date and that training is delivered as required.

Purpose (Teacher): 

  • To be a form tutor, supporting the academic, social, moral and cultural development of students in their care. To deliver their PSHE and citizenship education.
  • To contribute to planning courses and curriculum development. To develop appropriate syllabuses, resource schemes of work, marking policies, and teaching strategies in the curriculum area. To contribute to whole college planning activities.
  • To monitor student progress to inform teaching and learning  and intervene, promptly and appropriately, with students when necessary.
  • To fully participate in the enrichment programme and to cross-curricular and extra-curricular work. 
  • To communicate with parents in order to promote student’s welfare and progress. 
  • To communicate with persons or bodies outside of the college as appropriate.
  • To follow agreed policies for communications  in the college.
  • To take part in all liaison activities such as parents evening, open events, educational visits and liaison events with other schools and colleges.
  • To contribute to the development of effective subject links with outside agencies.
  • To contribute to the process of the ordering and allocation of equipment and resources.

Reporting to:  Assistant Principal, Vice Principal or Principal

Liaising with: Principal and other senior staff, heads of year, subject leaders/coordinators, relevant non teaching staff.

Working Time:  200 days per year. Full time. (1265 hours does not apply)

Additional Duties:  To play a full part in the life of the college. To support its distinctive aims and ethos and to encourage staff and students to follow this example.

Outcomes

  • Engineering is led and coordinated in a highly focused way, which ensures a consistent high level of student progress measured in terms of 3 and 4 levels (or equivalent).
  • Self evaluation is effective and focussed and informs early intervention for improvement
  • All staff within Engineering have a clear understanding of their particular roles and responsibilities
  • Students within Engineering are highly engaged and motivated proving positive feedback regarding their experiences and learning in lessons and know what they need to do to make further improvement
  • Assessment for learning is widespread and effectively used
  • Teachers of Engineering are highly engaged and motivated, fully understand their role  and feel challenged, valued and supported (evidenced through performance review)
  • The school performance management system is applied rigorously and effectively  with teachers benefiting the continuing professional development 

Other Specific Duties

To take part in the UTC's staff development programme by participating in arrangements for further training and professional development. To continue personal development in the relevant areas including subject knowledge and teaching methods.
