Job overview

Head of English

We are looking for an experienced graduate, exceptional teacher and inspirational colleague to lead the department and teach English across the full age range to A Level in this academically selective school. The person appointed will also be expected to contribute to the School’s extra-curricular programme.

The English Department

All girls study English and are entered for IGCSE English Language and IGCSE English Literature (both Edexcel), assessed by examination and coursework.  Approximately twenty-five girls each year take A level English Literature (Edexcel) in the Sixth Form, alongside a wide variety of other subjects.  They are divided into groups according to timetable requirements.  The Sixth Form teaching is shared across the English Department.  Public examination results at IGCSE and A level are consistently impressive and girls frequently go on to read English at top Russell group universities. The Head of Department plays a key role in the selection process at 11 plus and at various points higher up in school.

At present, seven members of staff help to deliver the English curriculum.  There is a separate Drama department with close links to English.  Members of the department play an active role in the life of school, contributing much to extra-curricular activities, both linked to the subject area and beyond.  Extra-curricular activities for which the English department is currently responsible include theatre trips, author visits, school poet laureate, reading groups, creative writing, cinematic society and a Philosophy group. Candidates are invited to suggest areas of literary and extra-curricular interest in their application.

How to apply:
