Gatehouse School, which is part of the Phyllis Wallbank Educational Trust, is a flourishing, non-selective independent school in the heart of the east end of London.  We are proud of our inclusive and friendly ethos which sets out to provide the best education possible for children, establishing a modern outlook on primary education while ensuring that it retains the key traditional values on which it was founded.  Our exam results are excellent and our pupils go forward to a range of competitive schools.

Gatehouse is seeking a highly motivated Head of English to join our [almost] three form entry from September 2021. The Head of English will be an innovative, hardworking teacher with a track record of improving student outcomes. The successful candidate will have extremely high standards, excellent communication skills, the ability to lead and inspire colleagues and a track record of outstanding teaching whilst leading an English department.

The successful candidate will lead English from Nursery to Year Six, have an excellent understanding of the whole curriculum, including the Early Years Foundation Stage, have good knowledge of the expectations for the 11+ and prep school examinations, and be able to lead and deliver an outstanding English programme. The successful candidate must be clear in their expectations, be able to inspire staff and students with their vision for the future and demonstrate a real passion for all aspects of English. The successful candidate will also benefit from being part of a professional, supportive staff team and will benefit from a competitive salary package. You will initially teach English to three Year 5 classes and develop English across the school in line with the Head’s vision.  This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Head of English/English Coordinator to join our outstanding school, where pupils are happy and learning is fun.

Visits to the school are limited at this time due to restrictions, but questions about the school are welcomed.  Please contact the Head’s PA, Mrs Barbara Cheltenham on 020 8980 2978, if you would like to speak with the Head or a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
