The Gatwick School is looking for an outstanding Head of English to join our team from January 2023. 

This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly improving all through school. You will be responsible for our English provision from KS1 to 4 and will be well supported by a second in department who currently leads our Primary English curriculum.  

The successful candidate will be an experienced and outstanding classroom practitioner with a track record of strong outcomes.  


The role:  

To set challenging teaching and learning objectives which are relevant to all students  

To develop strategies for the use of Literacy to promote new teaching methods and improve learning and monitor their effectiveness in raising standards of teaching and learning  

To lead or contribute to professional development activities as part of the planned programme for the school and to promote the sharing of good practice  

To make appropriate use of the school’s monitoring and assessment strategies to evaluate students’ progress towards planned learning objectives  

To use monitoring and assessment information to improve planning and teaching  

To have high expectations of students and build successful relationships centred on teaching and learning  

To establish a purposeful learning environment where diversity is valued and where students feel safe and secure and confident 

We are looking for individuals who have:  

  • Qualified teacher status  
  • Detailed understanding of planning the KS3 and 4 curricula  
  • Proven experience of leadership at KS3 and/or KS4 with excellent classroom management skills

Opened in 2014, and judged 'Good' by Ofsted in all areas.  The Gatwick School is a state-funded all-through school based in Crawley, West Sussex. Teaching children aged 4-16, the school is non-denominational and mixed gender. Located on Gatwick Road, it is less than a mile from the international airport of the same name.

The school can be accessed on public transport by the Metrobus network, with the Gatwick Road North bus stop situated outside the school. The Gatwick School has a breakfast club and runs OASIS clubs at the end of the day for after-school intellectual stimulation.
