UWCSEA has a vacancy for August 2019 at its East Campus for a Head of Grade (Infant School).

The Head of Grade orchestrates the learning for the grade level.  As such, it is a leadership role with wide scope, high visibility and significant influence. The Head of Grade takes a leadership role in all five elements of the Learning Programme and works closely with his/her grade level team as well as other Heads of Grade and the Primary Leadership Team. Each Head of Grade, guided by the College ethos, values and Leadership Standards provides a caring, intentional and stimulating learning environment which is diverse and international.

Person specification 

  • A good degree and a recognized teaching qualification or certification are expected.
  • Minimum of five years’ Primary school teaching experience (4-11 year-olds)
  • Teacher leadership and/or coaching experience in the Early Years (3 - 8 year olds).
  • Teachers should be willing and eager to participate in and contribute to five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academics;  Activities;  Outdoor Education; Personal and  Social Education and Service
  • Academic expectations include enthusiastic participation in Professional Learning
  • On average the College expects a yearly contribution of two sessions per week in each season to Activities and/or Service.
  • The College expects that teachers will participate enthusiastically in the curricular Outdoor Education experiences which are relevant to their students and will also occasionally volunteer for holiday Outdoor Education trips.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential alongside a willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners
  • Up to date with current research in Early Years
  • Experience leading and supporting teachers’ professional development
  • The following would be an advantage:
    - Knowledge and experience of international curricula, their delivery and assessment
    - Experience with the Readers’ and Writers’ approaches
    - Knowledge of and experience with Reggio Emilia inspired approaches
    - Experience with a child centred, play based approach
    - Experience teaching students who are English Language Learners

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead (with PLT) the development and implementation of the vision and direction of the Primary School, in particular through the strategic plan goals, with a focus on internationalism and sustainability.
  • Manage day-to-day student and parent matters e.g. student welfare / academic issues
  • Responsible for developing a culture of trust and a positive learning environment
  • Lead the implementation of the K-5 articulated curriculum and conduct collaborative meetings
  • Support the team’s well being, professional learning  based on both team and individual needs.
  • Advocate and support the team in leading learning across all 5 Elements.
  • Be knowledgeable about the learning taking place in each of the classrooms and ensure an effective learning environment for students and monitor their well-being
  • Co-lead parent workshops around best Early Years practice
  • Liaise with Student Support Services (Counselling, Learning Support) in their work with individuals and groups
  • Facilitate the Professional Learning Programme with each team member, ensuring that teachers’ goals lead to improved learning
  • Support classroom teachers, monitor student attendance and follow up with students and parents when required
  • Develop relationships/partnerships with parents through proactive communication - including class parents, parent meetings, letters, grade events, announcements.
  • Provide support to new teachers, substitute teacher and the HOG release teacher
  • Oversee student transitions (in and out of College) and student orientations
  • Lead teacher assistants in their roles to supporting the learning
  • Oversee grade level Outdoor Education trips, Service trips, events and field trips and delegate where appropriate, including risk assessments
  • Manage grade level operational budget
  • Oversee the reporting process within the grade level
  • Manage the process of class sorting, with the Vice Principal
  • Be aware of school policies and procedures, in particular child protection issues
  • Manage behavioural incidences 
  • Contribute to HOG and Middle Leaders meetings
  • Communicate pertinent information from Head of Grade and Middle Leaders meetings to teams
  • Facilitate communication between the PLT and the grade level team
  • Collaborate with other Heads of Grade, single subject teachers, teaching assistants, support teachers and Learning Programme heads to promote a strong Infant community
