Job overview

Role overview

This is primarily a classroom teaching post, with additional leadership responsibilities for a small department in one of the sections of d’Overbroeck’s. A full-time teacher can expect to have up to 18 hours of classroom teaching a week, as well as contributing to the International School’s programme of activities (some of which run after the end of the school day and at weekends). The bulk of the teaching will be in The International School, where, as Head of Department, you will have the lead role in delivering a Humanities course in year 9 and History IGCSE in years 10 and 11. If appropriate, a smaller amount of A level History teaching in the Sixth Form will be available. The ability to teach Geography at IGCSE would be advantageous, but is not essential. The role also normally includes that of form tutor, with additional pastoral responsibilities.

An additional opportunity for a senior academic leadership role in The International School may be available to a suitably qualified candidate. For this role, significant experience of working in middle leadership positions in secondary schools will be expected.

The department

History is a popular and thriving subject across all sections of d’Overbroeck’s and has obtained excellent results in recent years at A Level, GCSE and IGCSE.

In the International School, all students study a Humanities course in year 9, which you, with your colleague, will have responsibility for developing and delivering. In years 10 and 11 we follow the Edexcel IGCE History course, focusing on 20th century modules. We offer both a two-year course to students in year 10 and an accelerated one-year course to those joining in year 11.

All students across years 9-11 in TIS also follow an in-house course of study skills, global perspectives and project work. The outgoing History/Humanities teacher took a key role in devising and teaching this course and the ability to play a key role in developing this course would be an advantage.

A level teaching is an optional element of this post and would involve sharing the teaching of an A level group, following the AQA specification, teaching either the Russia 1855-1964 or Britain 1951-2007 module.

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
