Job overview

Senior School Head of History

We seek an experienced, flexible and well-qualified Head of Department to lead the teaching of History in the Senior School from September 2019. Previous experience of teaching History within the National Curriculum for England is essential, while knowledge and experience of the IB Diploma is desirable.

The British International School, Cairo is a co-educational school with 1,090 pupils aged 3-18 (500 pupils in the Senior School). An accredited member of COBIS, BSME and IAPS, and an IB World School, BISC is one of the leading academic schools in the region. Located on the fringes of Cairo, the School enjoys the benefits of a modern, purpose-built, spacious campus with state of the art facilities. Since relocating to the current site in 2008 the School has enjoyed continuous growth, doubling in size in ten years.

Cairo itself is a bustling city, home to some of the world’s most iconic ancient monuments, with good access to other countries in the region, Europe and Asia. It is a city with a rich cultural heritage, a crossroads between Africa, the Middle East and Europe. With a population close to twenty million Cairo is a city of huge contrasts and provides endless opportunities for exploration and discovery.

The School was inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in February 2015. The quality of pupils’ achievements, learning, attitudes and skills were judged to be excellent as were the quality of teaching, pupils’ personal development, pastoral care and the quality of leadership and management. The School’s next inspection is scheduled for November 2019.

Further information about the School can be found at www.bisc.edu.eg.

Applications are welcome from teachers who have experience of teaching in a British-curriculum school. To comply with Egyptian employment law, applicants must have a MINIMUM of three years teaching experience.

Remuneration

The British International School, Cairo (BISC) operates its own teaching scale, which mirrors that in the UK, and is related to teaching experience. All salaries are paid in Pounds Sterling and are tax free meaning you can expect to take home 20-30% more than you would in the UK. The minimum NET salary for a teacher with three years’ experience is currently £33,200, while the basic salary of the majority of staff is £38,300. The Head of Department role also commands a responsibility allowance. In addition all teachers appointed from outside Egypt on an overseas contract benefit from rent-free, furnished accommodation, private medical insurance, annual return travel to the UK, and generous fee remission for school-aged children (100% for the first two children, 50% for each additional child).

BISC was established in 1976 and has a reputation as one of the most successful schools in the Middle East. We teach boys and girls aged 2-18, with the majority of our students from Egypt, and our school's mission is to be a vibrant international community that promotes independent learning to develop global citizens.

We are based on a purpose built, state-of-the-art campus, 30 minutes West of the city centre. We are surrounded by high quality housing and facilities, though the hustle and bustle of downtown Cairo - and the pyramids - are not far away and easily accessible.

We follow the British curriculum, with a track record of academic success as well as a strong focus on pastoral care. We are an active IB World School, a member of COBIS and BSME, and thus the school provides a holistic education in a supportive and caring environment. We are a non-denominational school, and we welcome students from all faiths and traditions, embracing the principles of open-mindedness and understanding.

BISC is a large school with over 1,150 students across our Foundation Stage, Junior and Senior Schools. Up to Key Stage 3, we follow the EYFS leading to the National Curriculum for England, with modifications to reflect the particular geographical and cultural circumstances of Egypt. In the Junior School, teachers receive specialist support in a variety of subjects and all classes have a bilingual Teaching Assistant to support the class teacher. With the exception of Arabic, all classes are in English, which many children speak at home, and children make excellent progress in their language development. The School takes advantage of the history, culture and geography of Egypt through a range of offsite trips and activities.

At Key Stage 4, students are prepared for GCSE and IGCSE examinations with the majority of students choosing to study the full IB Diploma. Our results are above the global average and the majority of our students go on to attend universities in the UK and USA.

Our package for teachers is amongst the best in the world, with tax-free salaries paid in Pound Sterling. Each teacher receives a generous housing allowance, as well as free annual return flights, BUPA gold healthcare, and a large budget for CLD. Above all we offer a friendly and supportive environment for you to grow as a professional with like-minded professionals.

Finally, further details of our school can be found on the school's website, but if you have any queries please contact the Human Resources Department by email, using hr@bisc.edu.eg.

We look forward to hearing from you.
