Tes is currently supporting a friendly and supportive catholic academy, based in Medway. The school is looking to add a Head of History to their progressive and supportive Humanities Department ideally starting in April 2021.

The role will include managing the delivery of History at KS3, GCSE and A-level across year groups 7 to 13. You will lead your department to enhance provision and will get the chance to lead on exciting project work throughout the year. Project work may include revising schemes of work and ensuring the curriculum is engaging to all learners alongside projects that support student attainment, well-being and engagement within the wider school. However, as Head of Department you will have full autonomy to ensure your department meets targets and exceeds needs of our learners. You will lead by example, supporting and empowering your department’s teachers, staff and pupils to achieve to the best of their ability.

The Head of Department will also line manage the History department, supporting the SLT link and Headteacher to ensure the department achieve to its maximum potential.

“The successful candidate will be a History specialist who has the ability to put their vision for teaching and learning into practice, supported by an able team of staff. They will work closely with the Senior Leader who line manages the faculty, as well as the Curriculum Leader for Humanities, to create an engaging and challenging curriculum for students of all abilities. They will model at least good teaching practice and inspire others through the delivery of effective and exciting lessons. A bespoke CPD programme will be tailored to meeting their needs.

Our school is a non-selective coeducational secondary school for students age 11-18. A split site school with free parking, we are moving to brand new buildings in the spring of 2023. Our mission statement is that ‘The school educates students, spiritually and educationally forming them through Faith so that they can achieve their aspirations and contribute to their community’.  As a Catholic school, we are passionate about the formation of the whole student, making sure that we develop students into good people as well as ensure they get good results.

The school is in Medway, a 30-minute distance from London by road or high-speed rail link. Medway benefits from a multimillion-pound regeneration programme bringing new housing developments and facilities for its inhabitants; it also has the lowest council tax rates in Kent.  St. John Fisher also offers subsidised accommodation for employees and this will be offered to the successful candidate, should they be interested."

• on-going CPD with programmes of study such as NPQSL and MA in Educational Leadership

• progression support throughout the school and wider group

• support package for NQT’s/RQT’s including CPD and NQT mentorship;

• the chance to take on further responsibility such as Leadership roles in the future.

The school expects:

• A UK teaching qualification such as PGCE/PGDE, SCITT, BEd or MEd with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

• a relevant History Degree or a related subject

• experience of delivering History up to A-level pushing and engaging learners to progress within the subject

• experience managing a department: specifically people and financial management

• a love and passion for education.
