Abbey College Cambridge is one of the best sixth form colleges for international students in the UK. We specialise in helping students from across the world achieve the personal, social and academic growth needed to succeed at the UK’s best universities.

We are currently looking for caring and an enthusiastic Head of House to run a boarding house as part of our Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rated boarding team. 

As a Head of House, your role will be to provide top quality pastoral care for our students by leading a team in making the students feel part of our college community and supporting them in their journey towards independent living at university and beyond. You will ensure that the boarding house is run efficiently and that students feel that they are in a home from home environment, safe and well cared for. 

You will develop your team of house parents to ensure that they are able to provide the Gold Standard in care. You will work closely with the House master(s) affiliated to your accommodation and be a key point of contact for staff from across the school as a member of the middle management team. You will support the constant evaluation of practices and policies and help develop new initiatives in order to maintain an outstanding provision. You will actively promote the boarding aim and vision.

Your duties and responsibilities will include the following:

• Staff Management 

• Supervising the Pastoral Care of Students within the house

• Ensuring the Gold Standard is maintained in your boarding house by ensuring boarding is maintained to the highest standard to allow students to thrive in both their educational studies and personal lives. 

• To keep up to date with all national guidance including the National Minimum Standards, Keeping Children Safe in Education, the Social Care Common Inspection Framework and Boarding School Association guidance. Ensuring that the school maintains the highest standards in all these areas. 

Qualifications and Experience

You will hold A Levels or equivalent qualifications, be competent in the use of a computers, and have a working knowledge of record keeping and data protection. You will have experience of working in boarding or residential environments and of working with young students. You will have excellent verbal and written English and a working understanding of child protection. You will have the ability to manage and motivate staff to ensure a strong and effecting team. Higher level Boarding qualifications are desirable.

Hours

You will be required to work on a rota covering day, evening, and weekend shifts. You will work a 5 day on, two days off rota. Working 37.5 hours a week and up to 2 Sleep-ins per week.

Pay

A salary of £25,000 - £32,500 per annum is offered to the successful candidate depending on qualifications and experience. If you wish to live on site you will receive on site city centre accommodation, utilities and wireless internet. Meals are provided when on duty. These combined come to a value of £10,000 per annum. If you live on site an accommodation charge of £2,500 will be deducted from your pay at source.

Checks and Training

• Enhanced DBS checks to ascertain successful candidates suitability to work with children will be carried out. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and therefore all convictions, cautions and bindovers, including those regarded as ‘spent’ must be declared.

• Online searches will be carried out on candidates for any unsuitable content by or about candidates.

• Two written & verbal references from previous employers and a personal reference will be sought. Referees will be asked about candidates suitability to work with children and whether they know of any disciplinary offences relating to children or young persons and whether candidates have been the subject of any child protection allegations or concerns and if so the outcome of any enquiry or disciplinary procedure.

• Candidates full employment history will be checked, any significant gaps will require explanation and proof of any relevant qualifications will need to be provided.

• Successful candidates will be required to complete Child Protection Training via e-learning prior to commencing employment.

• Pre-employment health screening will also be carried out.
