Job overview

At Uppingham, we believe each of our pupils deserves to be given the best possible support to get the most from their education. To make this happen, we need a Head of Learning Support to play a key role ensuring students benefit from our excellent Learning Support service.

The Learning Support department consists of the Head of Learning Support and five

specialist teachers. All teachers support pupils across the subject and age range, employing their specialist subjects when necessary. Communication between the Learning Support department and the teaching staff is excellent, helped by a number of specific ‘link teachers’ in academic departments.

As Head of Learning Support, you will be responsible for the leadership and management of all aspects of learning support, guiding the work of teachers in the department and liaising with heads of departments, teachers, Housemasters/Housemistresses and parents, setting clear standards for successful interventions with pupils.

You will contribute to the training and induction of teachers joining the School, support the Registry with the admission of prospective pupils and also have a teaching timetable of pupils across the 13-18 age range.

Our aspirations mean we are looking for someone with the vision to develop a department that supports pupils and staff to the best possible standard. If you share our vision, we would be delighted to hear from you.

A PGCE or equivalent qualification is essential. A Specific Learning Difficulties Diploma or equivalent Level 5 is essential, along with a track record of excellent teaching.

In return, Uppingham School offers several benefits such as a pension scheme, a 50% contribution to premiums for the School’s private health scheme, as well as free membership of the School’s dual-use Sports Centre and a school fee discount available for children of staff. Accommodation may also be available.

Closing date:  9am, Monday 1st October 2018.

Uppingham School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the DBS.

“Pupils demonstrate positive attitudes towards work and study. They have good literacy skills at all ages and articulate ideas and opinions fluently. Work is generally presented neatly and pupils’ note-taking is effective. They develop good numeracy skills and their capacity to think critically is notable. Creative abilities are well developed and their exploration of ideas is particularly marked in their enrichment activities. Pupils’ study habits are good. In the lessons observed, pupils worked very well with each other, and also worked well independently. They enjoy their work and this stems in part from the good-natured atmosphere in lessons. Pupils use information and communications technology (ICT) proficiently.”
