Job overview

Are you an inspirational and creative teacher of Mathematics? Are you excited by the opportunity to lead a thriving Department of outstanding and experienced practitioners? We offer a friendly  and collaborative environment, within a team of dedicated and talented staff, fully committed to providing a transformative education for  the young people in our care.  If you have the qualities to build on the success of this Department, we would like to hear from you.

IGCSE, FSMQ, and A level are offered and numbers in the Sixth Form are consistently strong with three groups in both Year 12 and Year 13. The department is well-resourced and lessons are taught in four well equipped classrooms, plus a dedicated room in The Lang Centre (for Sixth Form lessons).

The person appointed will be able to lead and inspire the department, encouraging girls to enjoy and succeed in Mathematics at all levels.  He/She should have a willingness to teach Further Mathematics and to be experienced in the use of ICT as a teaching tool within the subject.

Teachers at Walthamstow Hall get to know their students very well and foster positive working relationships with them. We aim to make the lessons interesting and enjoyable, using a range of teaching techniques, and to build confidence and resilience in the students. The staff in the department work closely together, sharing ideas and resources, and are extremely supportive of each other.

The Department is staffed by well-qualified mathematicians who take a keen interest in current educational research and ideas are discussed at departmental meetings and INSET days. Staff are encouraged to attend relevant external CPD sessions and attend local Maths Hub meetings. There are three full-time teachers and five part-time teachers in the Department.

The Mathematics Department has a long tradition of academic achievement with a good number of girls electing to take Mathematics and Further Mathematics in the Sixth Form and beyond.

In the current academic year, over 40% of Year 12 pupils are taking Mathematics or Further Mathematics. We follow the OCR A level specification for Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

We are following the Edexcel 9-1 IGCSE syllabus with the expectation that girls will take the Higher Tier. Grades have been 100% A* to C (9-4) over the last few years, with many achieving the top grades. In 2018 71% achieved grades 7-9. The most able students also take OCR FSMQ Additional Mathematics at the end of Year 11.

About Walthamstow Hall Senior School

Introduction

Thank you for your interest in working at Walthamstow Hall.  We educate girls with academic potential to lead confident, challenging and fulfilling lives in the 21st century.

School Ethos

We believe in a true understanding of the root meaning of the word education, from the Latin verb educo: I lead forth, I raise up.  Not, ‘I cram full of facts or I make to jump through hoops’.  At Walthamstow Hall, pupils will discover that learning is an active process which enables them to get personally involved, not one which just passively happens to them.

We offer pupils an environment based on trust, security and friendship, where they have the confidence to try to be their best.  And by confidence we don’t mean brash or arrogant.  We mean that, whether innately ebullient, or whether quite shy, Wally girls are characterised by a quiet assurance that comes from knowing who they are and, moreover, that they are valued for who they are, by us and by each other.  This, we believe, is the best preparation for whatever life has in store.

School Details

There are approximately 580 pupils in the School 3 - 18, of which 442 are currently at Senior School. The Junior School (2 - 11 years) is on a separate site. Employee benefits include:

  • Enhanced salary scale based on DfE scales
