Beths Grammar School is a large multi-cultural school on the borders between London and Kent serving a wide range of vibrant and exciting communities. We specialise in boys' education in the main school and have a large, co-educational 6th form.
Following the current post holder's decision to retire, we are now looking to appoint an experienced and inspirational leader to support their department inn securing Mathematics as a top performing subject across all key stages within the school.
At Beths Mathematics is, and always has been, a successful and popular subject in the school. We are one of the top 10 larges centres in the country by entry at A Level, with around 180-200 students taking the subject in both Year 12 and Year 13.
The Mathematics Department consists of 12 teachers and has a co-ordinator in post for each key stage. At KS3 Mathematics is given three periods per week in Year 7, 8 and 9. At GCSE, students receive 5 periods per week in Year 10 and 4 per week in Year 11. We have also introduced GCSE Statistics as an options subject. Students can choose to take this, beginning in Year 10, and have 3 periods per week in which to study it.
Currently around 60 students per yeat opt to do this. Students enter the school above national expectations and the mean average predicted grade at GCSE is currently a grade 7.
At KS5 students study a traditional A Level course and this is by far the most popular subject in the school. However, our entry criteria of a grade 7 ensures the standards are high. Students receive 7 taught periods of Mathematics per week, more contact time than the vast majority of sixth form centres. Our next step as a department is to boost the overall progress of the students, with more attaining the very top grades and fewer struggling at the bottom. The average A Level attainment last year was a B. Further Mathematics is another popular subject, with around 20-25 students opting to study it each year. Last year's average A Level attainment was an A. These students represent our top Mathematicians and include many of our Oxbridge applicants.
The successful post holder will have responsibility for all aspects of the department leadership and management across Years 7-13.
