HEAD OF MODERN FOREIGN LANGAGES

Full Time - Required for September 2019.

MPR / UPR Scale + TLR

Nestled in Barnard Castle in the spectacular Teesdale countryside and imprinted with the historic values of the Dales and our close-knit community, Teesdale School is a place where traditional values of kindness, respect and hard work take precedence. Within 30 minutes of both Darlington and Durham and just over an hour from York and Newcastle, our idyllic yet convenient location affords our staff an enviable quality of life.

Our school teaches 575 children across Key Stages 3 and 4 and post-16. Our small size means that as a teacher here, you can really get to know your students; know who they are; their aspirations, ideas, talents and dreams, bringing out the best in them and helping to champion their ambitions and give them a great start in life.

We joined The North East Learning Trust in September 2016, a successful multi-academy trust led by The Academy at Shotton Hall, which has two consecutive outstanding grades, an outstanding SCITT and three national leaders of education. This partnership began with a clear focus on our school becoming truly outstanding and that journey is well underway. The GCSE results in 2018 placed us well within the top 10 in the whole of the North East in all key government measures of performance.  Importantly, whilst overall progress 8 is +0.43, there is little difference between different groups of pupils.

We are looking to appoint an excellent Head of Modern Foreign Languages who is passionate about their subject and who would like to play a crucial part in taking this strong department to their next stage.  We are looking for someone who is caring for their students, passionate about sharing their love of learning languages and determined to lead an enthusiastic team on their journey to become a center of excellence.  We are looking for someone who will enjoy being a part of a strong community and who wants to see every child experience success.

French and Spanish are taught to all students from Year 7 and the vast majority of students choose at least one of these at Key Stage 4. Spanish and French are options in at post-16 with 2 Spanish groups currently running. We expect all our students to be challenged, to be inspired and to achieve excellent outcomes.  As a Head of Department, you will be responsible for leading developments, delivering outstanding lessons and contributing to the wider education agenda of inspiring students and developing in them, a strong love of learning.

We would be delighted to hear from you if you are:

• An excellent teacher with an outstanding record.

• Collaborative, building strong professional relationships.

• Able to motivate and inspire students to achieve their full potential.

• Energetic and have a ‘can-do’ attitude.

• Someone who can have a measurable impact as an individual teacher and throughout the school.

• Ready to continue the development of an outstanding and vibrant Modern Foreign Languages Department and lead the department into the future.

About the role:

Modern Foreign Languages is a high performing subject at Teesdale School with rapidly improving outcomes. In 2018, the progress 8 score for EBACC subjects was +0.49. 15% and 19% of students achieved grades 8/9 in French and Spanish respectively in 2018. We were delighted. Our students are a pleasure to work with and this is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate.

The successful candidate will join us for September 2019 and will have the opportunity to teach all ability ranges.

We are offering a TLR commensurate with your experience, vision and capacity to take the department from strength to strength.

Closing date for applications:   11am, 26th November 2018.

Interviews: 28th November 2018.

Application forms and information pack are available from Teesdale School and Sixth Form Centre website, www.teesdaleschool.co.uk or Tracy Tuck, PA to the Head Teacher, Tel 01833 638166.  These should be returned either by e mail to tracy.tuck@teesdaleschool.co.uk or by post to Tracy Tuck, Teesdale School and Sixth Form Centre, Prospect Place, Barnard Castle, County Durham, DL12 8HH by the closing date.

Nestled in Barnard Castle in the spectacular Teesdale countryside and imprinted with the historic values of the Dales and our close-knit community, Teesdale School is a place where traditional values of kindness, respect and hard work take precedence.

In July 2019 we were awarded an ‘outstanding’ judgement in all areas from school inspectors Ofsted - the highest grade a school can achieve. This judgement, along with our subsequent excellent A level and GCSE exam results in August has accelerated our aspiration to become the very best school in County Durham. In 2020 we were named as the Sunday Times State Secondary School of the Year.

Our school teaches over 600 children, all of whom we know individually. We know not just their progress and grades, but take pride in knowing who they are; their aspirations, ideas, worries, talents and dreams. By understanding not just what our students can do, but who our students are, we can truly bring out the best in them, helping to champion their ambitions and nurture their talents.

About the North East Learning Trust (NELT)
