Head of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

September 2020 (Maternity Cover)

A highly qualified, enthusiastic and talented linguist is required to lead a well-integrated Modern Foreign Languages team offering German, French and Spanish, taking overall responsibility for the teaching of Modern Foreign Languages at Wisbech Grammar School.

French, German and Spanish is taught in a carousel to pupils in the Prep School and in the First and Second Forms (Years 7 and 8) in the Senior School.  In the Third Form, pupils will choose to study two of these languages and will continue with at least one of them to GCSE level.  All three languages are available for study to A-level in the Sixth Form.  The department has enjoyed significant success in examinations and offers a wide variety of experiences for those who study languages; these include: cultural evenings for all three languages, an Easter Study trip to Salamanca, a French Chateau trip for Second Form pupils, exchanges with our partner school in Germany, visits to Christmas markets and joint trips with other departments, such as Food trips to France.

Languages pupils have enjoyed success in regional and national competitions such as Spelling Bee and Language Perfect.  Modern Foreign Languages are taught in a suite of 5 dedicated language rooms, one of which is equipped as a Language Laboratory.  All rooms are equipped with a computer and projector.

The post represents an excellent opportunity for an experienced teacher to share their expertise, love and passion for these subjects at Wisbech Grammar School.

All members of the teaching staff are expected to assume a pastoral role within the School and to contribute to the School’s extra-curricular programmes.

Wisbech Grammar School is a mixed, independent day school based in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, for pupils aged 4-18. It has 600 pupils and welcomes children from all religions and none, while upholding the Christian values it was built on. In the past 15 years, the school has undergone substantial development, with the most recent project being a new £2 million refectory in 2015.

Wisbech Grammar School was founded in 1379 by the Guild of the Holy Trinity, which makes it one of England’s oldest schools. In 1970, the girls’ and boys’ schools were combined to make it co-educational, with all pupils occupying the girls' school on the North Brink of the River Nene. In 1983, the school was granted independent status.

Headmaster

Values and vision

The school goes beyond academic excellence and looks to the arts, sports and extra-curricular activities to produce rounded individuals. It celebrates difference and diversity and is immensely proud of its history, while placing just as much importance on the future. Wisbech gains consistently good results and prides itself on being the best school in three counties.

ISI report

“The quality of pupils’ personal development is excellent at all stages of the school. They become self-confident and assured individuals, meeting the aims of the school. They are able to reflect, to acknowledge their responsibility to others and to discern right from wrong. Socially, the school is a harmonious community; older pupils relate very well to the younger children and interact sympathetically with them, through the many opportunities to take responsibility, including within the all-age house groups.”
