Job overview

Head of Music

Gatehouse School

Required for January 2022 start

Closing Date: 1st September 2021

Interviews:  w/c 6th September 2021

Gatehouse School, part of the Phyllis Wallbank Educational Trust, is a flourishing, non-selective independent school in the heart of the east end of London.  We are proud of our inclusive and friendly ethos which sets out to provide the best education possible for children, establishing a modern outlook on primary education while retaining the key traditional values on which it was founded.  Our exam results are excellent and our pupils go forward to a range of competitive schools.

Gatehouse is seeking a highly motivated Head of Music to join our [almost] three form entry from January 2022. The Head of Music will be an innovative, hardworking teacher with a track record of improving student outcomes. The successful candidate will have extremely high standards, excellent communication skills, the ability to lead and inspire colleagues and a track record of outstanding teaching whilst leading a music department. Music is a very high-profile subject at Gatehouse School. Alongside weekly music lessons for each class, children have the opportunity to be part of the many musical clubs and activities on offer at the school, for example choirs, orchestras, ukulele groups and brass ensembles. These opportunities are currently managed by our Head of Music and a talented team of peripatetic instrumental teachers.  In addition to this, Gatehouse produces a number of performance opportunities for children throughout the year, for example nativities, musicals, recitals and end-of-term orchestral and choral concerts.

The successful candidate will lead our music department from Nursery to Year Six, have an excellent understanding of the whole music curriculum, including the Early Years Foundation Stage and be able to lead and deliver an outstanding Music programme. The successful candidate must be clear in their expectations, be able to inspire staff and students with their vision for the future and demonstrate a real passion for all aspects of Music. The successful candidate will also benefit from being part of a professional, supportive staff team and will benefit from a competitive salary package. You will teach music from Nursery to Year 6 with the assistance of a music assistant, and develop music across the school in line with the Head’s vision.  This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Head of Music/Music Coordinator to join our outstanding school, where pupils are happy and learning is fun.

Visits to the school are limited at this time due to restrictions, but questions about the school are welcomed.  Please contact the Head’s PA, Mrs Barbara Cheltenham on 020 8980 2978, if you would like to speak with the Head or a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
