We wish to appoint a dynamic and innovative Head of Psychology from January 2020.  The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the capacity to lead, inspire and develop students and staff.


ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Psychology department achieves outstanding outcomes for its students and takes pride in being collaborative, creative and dynamic in its teaching. As one of the largest A Level subjects, Psychology is taught in 3 blocks in both Year 12 and Year 13, with an average class size of 16. The department consists of three experienced specialists (including this post), who also teach additional subjects alongside Psychology. There is a strong uptake of Psychology at degree level, with a significant number of students securing places to study Psychology or Social Sciences at university each year. 


ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Founded in 1791, The St Marylebone CE School is an outstanding comprehensive school for girls with a mixed sixth form, serving students of all faiths or no faith. The School is a mainstream Academy for 1,170 pupils.  Successively rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and SIAMS, the School is one of the best performing non-selective state schools nationally.


We are the Lead School in the St Marylebone Teaching School Alliance and have 21 SLEs on the teaching staff.  There are around 100 members of teaching staff. 74% of teaching staff have been internally promoted since starting at the School.  The School is situated in the heart of central London, just minutes from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street on the tranquil Marylebone High Street, with Regent’s Park just moments away. We are close to excellent transport links (Regent’s Park, Baker Street and Bond Street Tube Stations).


The post-holder will be responsible for:

• leading and developing the department

• students’ attainment, progress and outcomes

• inspiring curiosity and enthusiasm for the subject

• quality of provision, intervention and enrichment to promote pupils' learning and progress

• development of the enrichment offer in Psychology, including extra-curricular opportunities, Subject Ambassadors and developing awareness of the subject in other key stages. 

• the department’s examinations, intervention and support, reports to Governors, finances and data-entries 

• co-ordinating meetings and in-department INSET

• leading, monitoring and developing teaching and learning

• appraisal / line-management of members of the department

• contributing to the ethos, priorities and wider life of the School at middle management level.


The successful applicant will have:

• energy, vision and enthusiasm to lead the department

• effective interpersonal and management skills in order to guide and direct both new and experienced staff

• the ability to work under pressure, prioritise and meet deadlines, including the ability to delegate effectively 

• innovation, with the drive to see developments and initiatives through to a conclusion

• a resilient, positive outlook

• strong subject and curriculum knowledge and high expectations for students and staff

• a critical understanding of developments in the subject and curriculum areas. 

• the ability to challenge, motivate and inspire students and staff

• the ability to effectively line-manage, lead and develop teachers and technical staff to ensure optimum performance and effectiveness (including participation in recruitment for the department).

• the ability to work collaboratively with other department members in creation and delivery of high quality teaching and learning. 

• a flexible, creative and resourceful approach

• accountability for students’ attainment, progress and outcomes

• the ability to make accurate and productive use of assessment to secure students’ progress

• the ability to support staff with tracking and monitoring in the subject area

The St Marylebone CE School is an all-girls secondary with co-educational sixth form in Westminster, central London. It is affiliated with the Church of England and designated a National Teaching School. Since 2011, St Marylebone has had academy status.

The St Marylebone CE School welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds, races, cultures, faiths and genders.   The School actively promotes diversity and inclusion across its community and our students come from a wide range of backgrounds: 40% of our students speak English as an additional language; 59% of our students come from backgrounds other than white British.

The secondary school is located next to St Marylebone Parish Church and is a short walk from Regent’s Park. The sixth-form facilities are based in nearby Blandford Street. St Marylebone was founded in 1791 and it carries the motto "An opportunity to excel". There are currently around 1,100 students, 300 of whom are in the sixth form.

St Marylebone CE School supports students to perform to the highest level in terms of commitment, effort and behaviour. It has embraced the religious and spiritual values of being a church school, as well as establishing a welcoming multi-faith community.

Students are encouraged to think critically, approaching issues with confidence both as individuals and cooperative members of a team. Teachers use the skills instilled in students to create a cohesive community setting, in which communication and respect are key.

The school has been a specialist arts college since 1998. It has since become a specialist school in mathematics and computing, and in special educational needs. This level of expertise has ensured St Marylebone is a model academic setting.
