Job overview

Required for September 2019, Abbot’s Hill School wishes to appoint a highly competent and enthusiastic Head of Religious Studies; a graduate, who is forward thinking in their approach to the subject and an inspirational teacher who will encourage girls to develop their own enthusiasm for the subject.

Set in beautiful grounds, Abbot’s Hill promotes collaborative and practical learning, nurturing the unique talents of each pupil, giving them the chance to develop their potential to the full, within a happy and caring environment.  We take pride in developing ambitious, bright and confident young people.

The Religious Studies Department encourages girls to understand the ways in which different religious beliefs and values are expressed and to communicate their own ideas about religion within a sound moral framework. Girls feel secure to express their own opinions and join in general discussion. At Abbot’s Hill, all girls study Religious Studies in Years 7-11 and take a short course GCSE. Pupils can also opt to study for a full course GCSE. The department has access to comprehensive resources, including an ICT room, providing an excellent environment in which to teach.

Teaching small classes of talented and motivated pupils, the successful candidate will demonstrate leadership and personal responsibility; you’ll possess effective teaching experience to GCSE level and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills for managing relationships with pupils, colleagues and parents.  You will also have a desire to contribute to the extra-curricular life of this busy, friendly school.

Closing deadline for applications:   10 January 2019

Interviews will take place in the week commencing:   14 January 2019

Early application is advised as applications will be considered as they are received and we reserve the right to appoint at any time in the process.

Abbot’s Hill is an all through, inclusive independent day school with the Nursery, Prep and Senior Schools on the same site. We welcome boys and girls in our Nursery and girls from 3-16 years.

Set in 76 acres of rolling Hertfordshire parkland with far reaching views across the Gade Valley, the school benefits from an open, expansive environment in which our pupils learn, explore and play. Pupils flourish here: the surroundings afford a safe-haven for discovery and experimentation while the energy and opportunity of London is only a stone’s throw away.

Founded over 100 years ago to educate young women of character, the school places great value on the development of the individual. Those girls lucky enough to come here will leave as confident, ambitious and creative individuals.

The ISI Inspection in January 2020 acknowledged Abbot’s Hill as ‘excellent’ in both the academic and personal development of the pupils – the highest judgement possible.
