Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join us in this newly created senior leadership role on the school’s journey towards ‘outstanding.’ The role will focus on ensuring high quality provision in all aspects the school’s work on a day to day basis.

Applications to the Headteacher’s PA by Sunday 12th July. Please complete an application form and provide a supporting statement, of no more than 3 sides of A4, outlining your experience and skills against the job description/person specification provided.

The school has grown rapidly over the recent years from just over 600 students to just under 1000 students. Although the school has made significant progress in recent years, with 3 out the 4 areas of the Ofsted framework judged ‘good’ in our most recent inspection, the school has had 3 consecutive ‘over all’ judgements of ‘Requires Improvement.’

The school’s senior Deputy Headteacher retired at Christmas 2019 after many years of service to the school. The school advertised for a Deputy Headteacher on 2 occasions this academic year but, on both occasions, failed to attract a strong field of candidates. The Head of School Improvement role has been created in order to attract a highly experienced and skilled senior leader and give the school additional momentum on its journey to ‘Good’ and beyond. Most importantly, the new structure would allow the current Headteacher (renamed as Principal) to focus on the development of partnerships across the town and the community to address the deep seated ‘barriers to learning’ which are preventing many of our young people from fulfilling their potential and holding back the long term, embedded and sustainable success of the school.

The Head of School Improvement would ensure high quality day to day educational and pastoral provision is maintained and the school continues to make progress in the short to medium term whilst the Principal, whilst still highly involved in day to day school matters, could focus on long term barriers to success. Many schools in similar circumstances employ this Executive Principal/Head of School model.

Our vision … recognise the value of learning and a pride in achievement

Fleetwood High School has a fantastic and strong community for 11 to 16 year olds which serves the Fylde Coast; predominantly Fleetwood, Thornton and Cleveleys, Lancashire.

The school is a true comprehensive, with a wide ability range reflecting a social mix, and it has many very bright youngsters. The school sees itself as the centre of its community and works hard to involve the community in school life.

Our central mission is to ensure that we play a significant role in removing the stubborn link between some of the social issues that our community faces and academic underperformance. Consequently, our students and our professionals are in the vanguard of a drive which seeks to prove that where teaching is excellent, leadership inspiring and behaviour standards exemplary, all children excel regardless of their background, social economic status or circumstances.

And… we are getting there! Ofsted have highlighted several areas where we are transforming educational provision for our young people…

Ofsted, January 2019…

• “Leaders’ determination and tenacity have underpinned the many improvements made since the last inspection”

• “…far-reaching improvements that leaders have made to the school”

• “Leaders have established a strong safeguarding culture”

• “The views expressed by parents reflect a sea-change in the school’s reputation”

• “Staff enjoy working at the school. They feel proud to be a part of the school’s improvement journey and are keen to develop the school further”

• “Pupils feel valued as individuals. They appreciate the work of staff”

However, we want to go further and faster. If you have the drive and commitment to help us raise the bar for every student, close the education gap between disadvantaged students and their more privileged counterparts and want to help positively transform the community we work within, then we want to hear from you!

At Fleetwood High School all offers of permanent employment are made subject to the successful completion of an initial 12 month probation period.

About Fleetwood High School

Fleetwood High School

the school with a heart, in the town with a heart

Headteacher - Richard Barnes

Our modern state of the art school is in the coastal town of Fleetwood, conveniently  located on the stunning Fylde coast local to Lytham, Thornton, Poulton-Le-Fylde and with great motorway links to the Lake District, Manchester and Liverpool; making our school accessible to and from all of these areas.

The Fylde area has been recognised as one of ‘The Best Places to Live’ in a recent Sunday Times guide, with Fylde and Wyre being comprised of many quaint towns and villages. Its historic streets are full of many fashionable independent shops, restaurants and public houses. For more information on the local area please visit:

The school is slightly larger than average (1060 on roll) and is growing fast as the popularity of the school in the local community grows. Pupil numbers have almost doubled over the last 5 years and we are now oversubscribed.

We are also proud to boast an average class size of just 26 pupils.

The school was judged to be ‘Good’ by Ofsted in 2022 and has since continued on a further journey of rapid progress. These are exciting times for the school and it is an exciting time to be considering joining us. We are an associate member of Cidari Multi Academy Trust and, as such, we work closely and share values and approaches with St Georges C of E Academy in Blackpool and Baines School in Poulton-le-Fylde. We sometimes share staff, professional development and leadership opportunities.

We do things here the ‘Fleetwood Way’, and our HEART values are at the centre of all we do. We have always seen ourselves as one big family here at Fleetwood High School, and that is reflected in our extremely low rate of staff turnover. Our team recognise the potential possessed by all our children, and they go the extra mile to make sure they realise that potential. This is a school where you can make a real difference.

When people visit our school, they are really impressed with the facilities, the close working relationships between our staff members and most importantly our children. We always encourage visits from candidates, and our school tours are carried out by our Head Boy and Head Girl. We feel this is the best way for any potential candidate to get a real feel for our amazing school.

Values and vision

Fleetwood High School is a community where the value of learning is recognised and pride in achievement is encouraged. Inspired through the culture of independent learning, students are expected to push the boundaries of their potential.

Our goal is for students to be happy and safe within a stimulating, well-ordered and challenging environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle. A climate of mutual respect and achievement, combined with excellent attendance, is embraced to create confident, articulate young people determined to make a positive contribution to their community.

Through an extensive range of partnerships, Fleetwood High School also seeks to develop key aspects of community life.
