ADVERT 2022  HEAD OF SCIENCE

We are seeking an experienced, vocational educator with a proven track record of successful UK, IB and international teaching and leadership experience who is passionate and enthusiastic about sharing their love of science with students and colleagues.

Our new Head of Science will enjoy working collaboratively with fellow innovative and creative leaders and teachers, who are committed to offering a world class, student-centred, education to a diverse and caring community of international students at the British School in Lomé, Togo, West Africa.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning themselves. They will be passionate about inspiring and challenging all our students to achieve more than they think possible, through the provision of an engaging learning program for science both inside and outside the classroom. They will be highly professional in their approach and enjoy challenging themselves and their students to ‘go the extra mile’ to improve their outcomes in Science.

The British School of Lomé is located in a very safe, leafy area of the capital city of Togo about 20 minutes’ drive from the sea. The school is well-established and enjoys an excellent reputation in Togo, in West Africa and globally. There are 4 well-equipped Science Laboratories at the school and STEAM events are very popular. Our students enjoy challenging themselves in all their subjects. Four of our 2022 year 13 students achieved first place in an International Business Enterprise Competition, outperforming some very worthy peers from other well-established and prestigious international schools. The panel of judges sent their congratulations to the team with the following message,

“You have proven true entrepreneurial spirit, technological innovation that fits your business strategies and an incentive to be future business leaders for the global generation. You have impressed us with your dedication and ambition.”

Our BSL alumni live and work all over the world and many of them have won international awards and are leaders in their field. Amongst our BSL Alumni we have successful authors, film makers, scientists, and entrepreneurs. In September 2023 we are looking forward to seeing many of them join us to help us celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the founding of BSL.

BSL has always been an inclusive school and our motto is ‘Endeavour is all.’ Our academic and behavioural expectations are high, and we encourage all students to give of their best in all areas of school life. We see BSL as not only, ‘The Gateway to University’, but also as The Gateway to a rich and rewarding future life in all its aspects.

BSL is an affiliate member of the Boarding School Association, and we are currently updating our boarding facilities. The International Duke of Edinburgh Award is well established at BSL, and our students enjoy contributing to service activities, learning new skills, doing a wide range of sporting activities and participating in Camping trips and adventurous journeys in the hilly regions of Togo. BSL is an affiliate member of the internationally renowned, Round Square School organisation and students participate in collaborative learning activities with their peers across the globe.

BSL has a well-established and authorised IBDP programme and offers Cambridge IGCSE’s in the Secondary School. The Primary school currently offers the UK curriculum and is in the process of developing the PYP teaching and learning strategies and practices to become a PYP accredited Primary School.

Togo is one of the fastest growing economies in West Africa, because of this, the international community is growing, and we anticipate this expansion to be reflected in the school numbers. Togo has recently become a member of the Commonwealth. This has resulted in the Togolese government actively promoting the English Language and the desire to learn and improve standards of English is prevalent. If you have the skills and experience for this post, and are interested in learning more about the school, we very much look forward to receiving your application.

Mrs Elizabeth Minnigin, Head of School.
