The Social Science department is a popular department that has flourished as the Sixth Form has expanded at St Joseph’s, with over 100 students studying across the disciplines. The Social Science department offers Sociology and Psychology A level, both on the AQA specification. As a department we pride ourselves on outstanding subject expertise and teaching, and in 2017 and 2018, both Sociology and Psychology achieved grade 2 on ALPs reports, showing student progress in these subjects to be within the top 10% of schools in the country.

In addition to outstanding achievement, we aim to enrich our students by offering extra curricula activities to broaden our students’ knowledge of the subjects. These opportunities include annual trips to conferences and a charity expedition in Thailand. We have numerous students who choose to study Social Sciences at university and an important part of our role is to support these applicants.

Recently designated “Outstanding” (Section 48) St Joseph’s is a school where “pupils make outstanding progress “. St Joseph’s is well known for being a great school to teach in, where the students are highly aspirational. We were judged ‘Good’ by Ofsted in January 2016 where the school was described as having a ‘deep seated conviction and moral purpose that all pupils have the right to an excellent education which drives a very positive culture in the school’. Our progress 8 score for 2018 placed us in the top 14% of schools nationally.  We believe in professional development; In exchange for hard work and a commitment to the school, we will ensure that you are prepared for the next stage in your teaching career.

About St Joseph's Catholic High School

St. Joseph’s Catholic High School prides itself on being a Catholic, listening and learning school. The students are at the heart of everything we do, and we challenge our staff to: Love the children and let them know that they are loved.

This love is present in the care, support, challenge and curriculum we deliver where we ASK (Attributes, Skills and Knowledge) our children to develop as learners and as people to transform the world by ‘Unlocking Belief in All.’

To support our staff in this mission we:

  • We work hard for the children and we care for each other like a family.
  • We have a behaviour system that lets teachers teach.
  • We treat teachers like surgeons with weekly CPD and training.
  • We have small class sizes and give teachers time to prepare.
  • All teachers are included in our reading and electives programme.

We are inspired by St Joseph, patron Saint of workers and a member of the Holy Family. We aim to create a place where children aren’t just loved but that they know they are loved. It is this ethos that enables our children to become academically successful. Here, all children are developed according to their ability and we make every effort to ensure that we reach out to all regardless of background.

You’ll experience a happy atmosphere at St. Joseph’s in which the dignity and worth of each pupil and member of staff is recognised, developed and safeguarded. Our school is recognised for its atmosphere of welcome where all feel at home in a sense of safety and security. Staff are willing to be present with the pupils in friendship and to go that one step further, where this is necessary, to meet the needs of young people.
