Job overview

An exciting international promotion for our current Head of Spanish has opened up the opportunity for an outstanding teacher and manager to join our Faculty and lead the thriving Spanish Department during the next stage of its development. Languages are at the core of the Whitgift curriculum with pupils learning three on entry in Year 7 and encouraged to continue two of those to GCSE level. In Spanish, we currently prepare pupils for the Edexcel IGCSE and the academically rigorous Pre-U, as well as the stimulating and refreshingly unbounded IB course. Around a quarter of Whitgift Sixth-Formers take the IB (although this number is growing) with Spanish offered at a variety of levels including Language A for native speakers.

We are a busy and thriving Faculty, constantly seeking to improve our practice and the opportunities which we offer pupils. A large range of exchanges and trips are run by the Spanish Department on an annual basis, and the promotion of Spanish throughout the School will be a key part of the role of the new Head of Spanish. A very high proportion of Whitgift pupils go on to study Languages at university and the successful candidate will need to continue to enthuse pupils and help them prepare for university success. The heads of the individual languages form a strong team with the Head of Faculty, and we are seeking to appoint someone flexible, dynamic, academically rigorous, innovative and collegiate, who exudes a passion for the language, literature and culture of the Hispanic-speaking world.

Staff will be encouraged to contribute fully to the co-curricular life of the School and this is reflected in the salary offered. A strong commitment to the pastoral and house system is also anticipated. Accommodation may be available; alternatively assistance is offered towards removal expenses.

We welcome applications from all parts of our community as we aspire to attract staff that matches the social and cultural diversity of our student intake.

For further information and an online application form, please visit www.whitgift.co.uk/vacancies. For any queries, please telephone the Human Resources Department on 020 8688 9222 or email SchoolHR@whitgift.co.uk.

Applications will be reviewed on a daily basis and interviews may occur at any stage after applications are received so we invite interested candidates to apply as soon as possible.

Whitgift School (part of the Whitgift Foundation) is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Where applicable, applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
