Job overview

The Board of Thetford Grammar School is seeking an exceptional individual to become our next Head from September 2023.

The past five years have seen exciting changes contributing to impressive growth in domestic pupil recruitment, the re-opening of boarding after a 70-year hiatus, the establishment of oversees pre-prep campuses, and the development of our bespoke prep school curriculum.

This is an excellent opportunity to help shape the future of one of the oldest independent schools in England as it continues to grow and develop. Thetford Grammar School is proud of its history as a seat of learning stretching back over 1400 years. Today, we are an academically-focussed, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 3-19, gaining outstanding results at GCSE and A level as a product of bright, hard-working pupils, passionate and talented staff, small class sizes, and close relationships between school and home.

The new Head will be at the heart of a community that embraces change whilst preserving the ethos and traditions that have supported Thetford Grammar School throughout the centuries. The new Head will work closely with the Board to design and implement a long-term vision for the school that builds upon recent successes, as well as our rich history, to ensure a strong, sustainable future for Thetford Grammar.

We are looking for a dynamic, strategically-minded and enthusiastic leader who will consolidate our academic and pastoral strengths, determine medium and long-term priorities, and inspire confidence in all stakeholders.

The new Head will have an excellent track record of senior leadership, ideally as either a Head or Deputy. The successful candidate will be an educator with the skills and knowledge necessary to affect positive and ongoing change. Most importantly, they will lead with energy, passion and integrity.

Please see the applicant information pack for further details. Prospective candidates are also welcome to arrange an informal call with Mr Michael Brewer, our current Head.

The expected start date for the new Head is September 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, depending on the candidates’ notice period.

Closing date: 10am, Friday 3rd February

Shortlist interviews 9th and 10th February, final interviews week commencing 27th February

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and all successful applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate for the post, including checks with any past employer and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Thetford Grammar School is an equal opportunities employer.
