Job overview

The Governors of Edgeborough School are seeking to appoint a new Head to succeed Mr Dan Thornburn, who will be leaving in December 2021, to become Head of Millfield Prep School, after four years of highly successful leadership.

This is a unique and wonderfully exciting opportunity for an exceptional and dynamic school leader.

Edgeborough is an outstanding co-educational Preparatory School with a reputation for excellence in all areas. Founded in 1906, the school is situated in 50 acres of beautiful, rolling Surrey countryside. The school is very well resourced in all areas. Facilities include a sports hall, theatre, music, art, DT and dance studios, state of the art science and ICT facilities, swimming pool and large astro-turfed area. There are currently over 350 pupils in the school aged from 2 to 13.

In February of this year Edgeborough and Charterhouse announced the merger of their two schools from September. This represents the formalisation of a very close relationship that has existed between the two schools for many years. Both Edgeborough and Charterhouse are flourishing in their own right and enjoying a period of growth and expansion. By joining the Charterhouse family of schools, Edgeborough will continue to build on its success and momentum while also benefiting from the additional input of specialist teachers and coaches, and access to Charterhouse’s facilities. The merger will also bring financial benefits from economies of scale and, while both schools are financially secure and seeing record pupil numbers, they will be even stronger together.

Following the merger, Edgeborough will retain its individual identity as one of the leading day and boarding co-educational Preparatory Schools in the country, preparing its pupils for entry to a range of senior schools, including Charterhouse. It will continue to have its own DfE registration and ISI inspection regime and will retain its membership of IAPS. The Head of Edgeborough, together with their own senior leadership team, will have responsibility for all aspects of the day-to-day running of the school. He/she will be a member of the senior executive team of Charterhouse and will report to the Head of Charterhouse, Dr Alex Peterken, who will have overall executive responsibility for the Charterhouse family of schools.

The new Head will be an energetic and strong leader with proven management skills. He/she must be able to lead, challenge and inspire both staff and pupils, and build unshakeable confidence with parents. To be successful they will need to have vision, warmth and charisma. They will embrace a child-centric approach to every decision and feel that it is a joy and a privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility of making every day for the children memorable and enjoyable. It is important that the new Head works with the staff team and has a collaborative and collegiate leadership style. One of the key priorities is to ensure the provision of exceptional teaching and academic excellence whilst maintaining the essential ethos of the school. Edgeborough will continue to be an ambitious and forward-thinking school and requires a Head with inspirational leadership, a thorough knowledge of the latest curriculum developments and outstanding interpersonal skills.

A highly competitive remuneration package, including family accommodation on site and generous fee remission for children, is available commensurate with the seniority of the post and the experience of the successful candidate.
